Chapter 255 My own wolf was bloodied, but nothing severe. A torn claw, and bite marks on our flanks that hadn't gone deep enough to do true damage. With blood on our muzzle, we resumed our dash towards the pack house. It was less than a mile, and when we emerged from the forest, nothing immediately appeared wrong. At the door to the pack house, I shifted, calling for Avery. There was no response. She wasn't here, but there was no sign of foul play, nor did I smell the stench of enemy rogues. Surely, if rogues had approached the pack house, someone would have sounded the alarm.

Was she actually out in the woods, waiting for me? I raced back towards the forest in wolf form. I needed to find her! Avery's POV Tears streamed down my face as I left the pack house behind me and drove down the road out of town. 'It's not too late to turn back,' my wolf said sorrowfully, 'this decision makes no one happy, and it will make your enemies happy! That should be all you need to know that you should rethink.' She was getting easier to ignore, but I had to admit that some of what she was saying made sense. However, my mind was made up.

'I can't go back there to the man who hurt me,' I said, with as much resolve as I could muster. Unfortunately, my wolf knew exactly how uncertain I was. 'You are not safe alone, my wolf said. 'I have always been alone!' I snapped, wiping my tears away angrily, 'That's the problem! Gideon provides the illusion of safety, but never once have I truly been safe!' The truth of my words steeled my resolve, and I gripped the steering wheel tightly as I accelerated away from the village. I rolled down the window and let the warm breeze dry my face. I should be feeling happy.

The hardest part was over. I was free. Then I noticed the car following us. We had just crossed the border of Nightwolf territory when the unmarked sedan pulled out from a side road and began following us. At first I was unconcerned, but after a few miles they were catching up to me, and seemed to be driving awfully close to my bumper. I turned down a side road, and they did the same. Now we were on a gravel farm road that ran alongside a farmer's crops. I couldn't turn around without stopping, but I was also running out of road.

After another mile even the gravel tapered out and the road became dirt ruts, then nothing. 1/2 Chapter 255 +25 Bonus I stared at the farm field ahead and debated whether the pack car I was driving could make it across the furrowed rows. The car rolled to a stop. The tinted windows of the car behind me revealed nothing. I opened my door and got out, turning to glare at the car.

"What the hell do you want?" I shouted, "You don't know who you are messing with!" There was a long moment when no one in the other car moved, then a back door opened and out stepped two powerful warriors with a smaller woman between them. The woman had sunglasses, but as she stepped forward and pulled them off, I recognized her. It was Dierdra. "You," I spat. "Me," she nodded with a bright smile, "Going somewhere?" "None of your business," I replied, even as my heart dropped. She clearly had brought muscle, and they must have been waiting for me.

Those warriors looked like they were ready to stop me from leaving, too. "Get in," Dierdra twitched her head at her car, "You're coming with us." "The hell I am," I said, even as the warriors stepped forward, "Where are you going to take me?" "To the Rogue King of course," Dierdra's smile was cold, "He's been waiting for you, and he'll be so pleased that we found you." At her nod, the warriors rushed forward. I tried to dash towards the tree line to escape them, but I didn't have access to my former speed or stamina, and they caught me less than halfway here.

As I was dragged back to the car, all I could think was that Gideon would never know they had taken me. He would just think I had left on my own.
