---- Chapter 154 Avery's POV The tug of Gideon's arm around me, his hand on my waist, tethered me to him as he drew me out of danger and spun me into the dance seamlessly. And just like that, it felt like the pressure that had been building up within me released. The danger I had felt on all sides fell away, and my world closed in in a totally different way. There was only Gideon and I, our feet moving around each other, as we spun in unison and drifted through the universe. I could barely hear the swell of the orchestra as we danced.

Gideon's eyes were fixed on me, and while his gaze felt distant, it was also neutral. He didn't hate me. The tension I had been holding slithered out of my body. My shoulders relaxed, and I leaned into him gratefully. His strong hand clasped around mine as he pushed and pulled me around, but with him it never felt forced. "Once again you have saved me," I stared at his chest, afraid to meet that dark stare and have it stop my words in my throat. I needed to say this, "This morning..." I felt Gideon tense under my hands, and I knew if I looked at him he would be glaring.

He didn't want me to speak of it, but I had to. "Tf it... If it was you...," I stumbled through the thoughts that had been repeating in my head all day, "I can't regret it. I refuse to ---- regret it." Iraised my head and saw his stare fixed onto my face as I spoke. "No one could feel what that felt like and regret it. It was... something bigger than either of us," I knew this made me sound like a hopeless romantic, but I just needed to know that he'd felt it too. "Please, Gideon. If you don't want to speak of it ever again, I will try and understand, but... don't tell me that wasn't real.

That we weren't perfect for each other," I found my voice growing thick as tears sprung in my eyes, "I could put up with just about anything. Throw me to the other Alphas if you choose. Cut me down as your Luna. I just need to know..." "Know what?" Gideon growled as the song wound down to its end and the dancers stopped. He didn't release me however, his hand still caged mine. His body still held me to him so tightly his fingers were digging into the corset of my dress. "Know that it was real," I whispered. Gideon's eyebrows creased with a frown.

He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could respond another voice rang out. "This is how you prove your love for me?" Dierdra stood in the middle of the dance floor, arms crossed, "By running back to HER?" Her face was mottled with fury, bright pink splotches vibrant on her cheeks. Gideon's jaw clenched, but he still had not released me. Around us, the dancers slipped away to the sides of the dance floor, ---- leaving just the three of us under the lights as the band hesitated to begin the next song.

"Gideon is a good man!" I protested, "You shouldn't take this out on him." Dierdra's eyes flashed, "Oh, so the whore speaks? You who led him on until he fell for you and betrayed me? How DARE you?" Her hand flashed out as she tried to land a slap on her face, but Gideon spun me around and put himself in the way of her strike instead. The sound of Dierdra's hand smacking into Gideon's face rang with a crack in the echoing ballroom. You could hear the collective intake of breath as the other attendees reacted. Dierdra herself paled and quickly dropped her hand, but she did not apologize.
