Chapter 223 Gideon's POV The uproar that broke out in the Pack Meeting when Dierdra's mark disappeared was nothing compared to the chaos that roared through me. I hadn't believed-hadn't wanted to believe-that on top of everything she had lied about that too. In the wake of initial shock, I felt a cold calm descend upon me, and I stepped closer to Dierdra, watching her face turn towards me full of dread. Fear was in her eyes, and for the first time since she had come into my life, I welcomed its presence. She should be afraid.

She had chosen to enter into my life, and into our pack, solely intent on deceiving me, on accomplishing her own ends. What was her ultimate goal? There was only one way to find out. With a low growl, I leaned over her. Interrogation was, unfortunately, a skill I had honed over many years of practice. Dierdra might be a skilled liar and manipulator, but we would see how good she was at withstanding the questions I had for her now. As it turned out, it took very little to extract information from her.

The weight of the moment had added up -her imprisonment last night, the disapproval of my family, and now the palpable dismay and rage of the assembled pack members who had witnessed her mark disappear. There was something so eerie about seeing that usually indelible mark vanish from her skin as t had never been there. "I was sent by the Rogue King," she swallowed heavily, refusing to meet my eyes. "To undermine our defense against his incursions in Nightwolf Territory?" I prompted.

"Partially yes, but that wasn't my primary mission," she licked her lips nervously and I leaned in closer. So did most of the audience. "What was your mission?" She raised her eyes to mine, and then they drifted to the woman standing a few feet away. "To capture Avery, to force her to bear him a powerful heir." 1/2 Chapter 223 +25 Bonus "W-what?!" "It's her lineage," Dierdra's words spilled from her in a rush, "The Rogue King tracked her down because whoever breeds with her will create a massively powerful heir. He will do anything to get her for himself." Everyone was staring at Avery now, including me. I felt shocked as I viewed her in this new light. Remorse was building within me. She was so unassuming, this woman I had married. Beautiful, smart, and strong.

I had known these things already, but if Dierdra was to be believed, she was also incredibly powerful. (1) To think, I had spent so much time and energy on Dierdra thinking she was my mate and carrying my pup and none of that was true. Meanwhile, Avery had been doing hard labor, still pledging her loyalty to my pack, and all she had asked for in return was that I rescue her mother.
