---- Chapter 416 By the time Maggie finished, it was past ten. Autumn had begun, and the temperature had dropped sharply with the rain these two days. Maybe she'd sat at the computer too long and caught a chill-just as she closed the laptop and stood to shower, a wave of cold washed over her and she sneezed several times in a row. After showering, her nose started to run and her throat burned, parched and raw.
Realizing she might be coming down with a cold-and that the household staff would already be asleep at this hour-Maggie went downstairs herself and made a little soup to ward off the chill. She'd just come back up after finishing it when she heard Franklin's voice: "Not sleeping yet?" ---- Maggie turned her head. "About to." The soup and some vitamins she'd found downstairs had warmed her a bit; she felt somewhat better. But she was tired and not in the mood to talk. "I'm going back to sleep." She turned and returned to Isabella's room, falling asleep not long after.
She didn't know how much time had passed when, in a haze, she seemed to hear Isabella's voice: "Mommy, you're really hot." Footsteps followed-others entering the room. Maggie tried to open her eyes, but her head was heavy and soon she drifted off again. When she woke, she felt weak and headachy, her throat burning. She tried to sit up for some water. As she pushed. herself up, someone came over to steady her. "Have ---- some water first?" Maggie blinked and finally opened her eyes. It was Franklin standing before her. He had already turned to pour water; within moments he handed her a glass.

Maggie took it reflexively. She started to thank him, only to find speaking hurt-her throat was too raw. She'd barely taken two sips when Franklin connected the room's landline. "Bring some congee up," he said. The water helped her clear her head. Setting the glass on the bedside table, she froze again- She was not in Isabella's room. She was in Franklin's. From the looks of it, he'd been taking care of her; an open book lay on a small side table. She was about to look away when Franklin hung up. ---- "Tt was 39.8°C ten minutes ago. I've already sent for Mr.
Zane-he should be here in a few minutes." Maggie wanted to speak, then noticed the dim light outside. It seemed the rain was still falling. Remembering she had a morning meeting, she asked, "What time is it now?" "Eight-twenty." Still early. She exhaled in relief-then Franklin asked, "Do you want your phone?" "Yes," Franklin stepped out to Isabella's room to fetch it. Just then, the butler arrived with the congee. As Maggie thought of getting up to wash, a rumbling noise sounded from outside. ---- She paused. Before she could react, the butler smiled. "That should be Mr.
Zane." Seeing her confusion, he added, "The rain's lighter and the water's receding, but the roads haven't been cleared-cars can't get through. Your fever was so high that Mr. Franklin was worried, so he arranged for a helicopter to bring Mr. Zane to see you." The butler had other matters to attend to. After a few instructions, he left.
