Chapter 83: Candice felt a little guilty, but on second thought, why should she? Milton was indeed her client. She looked him straight in the eye and explained, "I do have two phones, one for work and the other for daily use." Actually, having two phones helped her keep her contacts organized. "So, we're just connected through work?" Milton stared at her intently, his gaze seeming to see right through her. "Yeah," she nodded. "Put my contact in your other phone right now!" he ordered, his commanding tone almost making Candice comply immediately.
However, she held her ground, gripping the phone tightly. "I'm sorry, Mr. Lopez. But I think it's better if we keep things as they are." She was indirectly declining his Saturday invitation. The atmosphere in the car grew suffocating after her words. The air felt so thin she was afraid to breathe. Candice could sense his anger-she would have probably felt it even if she were outside the car, across the street. The uncomfortable silence stretched on until Milton finally snapped coldly, "Get out!" "Uh... okay, bye. Thanks for the ride." She quickly unfastened her seat belt and opened the door.

She didn't look back, certain his expression was dark and intimidating. The man was so fickle, she scoffed inwardly. As Candice put weight on her feet, a sharp pain shot through her ankle. She winced but kept moving forward. She was almost running away-well, hopping-wanting to get as far as possible from that toxic atmosphere in the car. She expected Milton to have driven off by now, but to her surprise, he grabbed her hand from behind. Startled, Candice turned around and stared at him. Why the hell was he still here? She was genuinely shocked.
Milton was an arrogant man, but after the humiliating incident in the car, he still had the will to come after her. Candice couldn't help but see him in a new light. Without saying a word or asking for her permission, Milton held her arm and helped her to the door. At the door, Candice said politely, "Thank you. I can go up on my own." She really needed him to leave. This wasn't her home. Otherwise, she might have entertained him. In response, Milton released her arm. Before leaving, though, he looked at her intensely and said, "You didn't say no to my invite, so I take it you'll be coming.
I'll pick you up at ten o'clock on Saturday." With that, he turned and left without giving her a chance to respond. "Hey..." she started, but he was already gone. When did she accept the invite? Well, it was true she hadn't refused directly, but she hadn't agreed either. Candice rubbed her temples and sighed. Communicating with this man was simply impossible. Since she had a tough day ahead, she decided to rest first. After dealing with the pretrial mediation at court tomorrow, she would have to find a way to make things clear to Milton.
Before entering the building, she straightened her shoulders and relaxed a little. She threw the high heels into the trash can, deciding she wouldn't wear them anymore. As she started walking in, she saw Greyson slowly emerging from behind a large tree. He was wearing a grey shirt with a loose tie. Apparently, he had come here straight from work. Candice stopped in her tracks when she saw him. Instinctively, she glanced back, but Milton was gone-thankfully. Still, she felt uneasy. It seemed like Greyson had seen Milton helping her here. He walked slowly toward her and stopped in front of her.
Then he looked down at her bare feet. "What happened?" he asked, his eyes still fixed on her feet. "The heel of my shoe broke. I just threw them away," Candice replied seriously. "Is that why he gave you a ride? Where were you tonight?" A grim expression flashed across his face. Candice frowned and narrowed her eyes at him. "Let's talk inside." . ᗰσ υ ι ɢ. . .
