Chapter 654
In the photo, a one-year-old girl hugged a stuffed toy. Her grin
stretched so wide it nearly reached her ears. She looked bright,
carefree, and radiant.
The image looked nothing like the cautious, restrained Sydney
of recent years. Yet she recognized the child almost at once.
The little girl was her. It was Sydney before her adoptive parents
took her in.
Achill crept down her spine as she replied.
Sydney: [What exactly do you know?]
Even she still stood in the fog when it came to her own origins.
So how did Penelope seem to know everything?
Raymond could not see the phone screen from his angle. Even
so, he sensed the shift in her mood.
This time, he did not ask.
The car sped the rest of the way. By the time they reached Delta
Mansion, it had barely stopped before someone pulled the door
open from outside.
----
Sydney looked up and met Julian's dark eyes. The chaos in her
chest eased at once. "You're done already?"
She had thought he would not be home until the afternoon.
Julian steadied her as she stepped out of the car. "Yeah. The
rest of the work can be handled remotely.”
As he spoke, his gaze shifted toward the uninvited guest.
Raymond knew exactly why he was annoyed. He rubbed his
nose. "These days, people don't really go for that whole 'son
paying for the father's sins’ thing.”
Julian's voice turned cool. "These days, people also don't show
up at someone else's house right at mealtime.”
Agatha appeared at just the right moment. "Oh, that's enough
from you."
With a bright smile, she waved Raymond inside. "Ignore that
brat. Come in and eat.”

She did not know what had happened, but she understood one
thing. They could not afford to offend Sydney's family. If they
upset them and the other side took offense, her granddaughter-in
-law might disappear.
She then took Sydney's hand. "You must be hungry.”
----
Sydney nodded. "I really am."
After they entered the house, Sydney went to wash her hands.
While she was in the restroom, Raymond gave Julian a look. "
Something's off with her. Ask her about it after | leave."
Sydney trusted Julian far more than she trusted him, the brother
she had never even known existed. It made sense that she
would not tell him, but she would certainly tell Julian.
Julian frowned. "What happened?”
When Sydney got out of the car earlier, he had already sensed
something on her mind. She did not seem as relaxed as she had
that morning. He had assumed it was because she had learned
about the Hutton family's situation.
But from the way Raymond spoke, that was clearly not the case.
"Someone called her while we were on the way back," Raymond
said as he rolled up his sleeves and sat down. "Probably
someone she doesn't like. She didn't answer. But the person
might have sent her a message afterward.”
“Alright.” Julian's gaze flickered as he glanced toward the
restroom. "I understand."
Just as he finished speaking, the restroom door opened.
----
After lunch, before Julian could even hint that it was time for the
guest to leave, Raymond received a phone call. He tossed out a
quick goodbye and hurried off.
Julian wrapped an arm around Sydney and led her upstairs for a
nap. "How is Madam Hutton recovering?"
"Did you already know about the Hutton family?"
They spoke at the same time.
“Yes. | found out a few days ago," Julian answered without
hesitation.
"No wonder. Inside the elevator, Sydney leaned lightly against
his arm as she answered his question. "She is recovering well.
Soon, she should be able to stop using the wheelchair."
In fact, Florence could already walk steadily with a cane. It still
took effort, so she relied on the wheelchair most of the time.
Julian lowered his eyes and looked at her with quiet fondness. *
Dr. Wilson, you're really impressive.”
After he brought her back to the bedroom, Julian did not return
to his study. He tucked the blanket around her, then began
working at the desk in the room instead.
----
Usually, that would make Sydney feel safe enough to fall asleep
quickly. But today her mind would not stop tuming
A long time passed, and she still could not sleep. When Julian
heard her turn over, he closed his laptop and walked to the bed.
He sat beside her and watched the slight tremble of her lashes.
She was clearly pretending to sleep.
His voice softened. "Who upset our little Precious?"
