Chapter 637

James' voice turned noticeably colder. "Missing?"

"Yeah."

Though she answered him, Diana kept her eyes fixed on

Theodore.

Half an hour earlier, Megan had been released on medical bail.

Bail procedures were usually complicated and time-consuming,

yet hers had moved with suspicious speed.

The release was technically lawful, and Theodore's favoritism

was no secret. The police could not justify shadowing her every

step. No one wanted to offend the wrong person. If Albus

passed one day and Theodore assumed control, who would

safeguard their positions?

No one expected that the moment supervision eased, Megan

would vanish from the hospital as if she had evaporated.

Not only Diana and James, but also Albus and Elizabeth now

regarded Theodore with dark expressions.

Florence, however, showed no surprise. Theodore shielding

Megan was nothing new.

In the past, Albus had heard rumors. Since nothing had

----

escalated too far, he had turned a blind eye. This time, however,

a life had nearly been lost.

Hesitation crossed Theodore's face.

Albus’ expression, which had only just softened, darkened again.

He slammed his palm on the table. "Theodore! Give me a

straight answer. Does this have anything to do with you?"

If his son had truly lost all sense of right and wrong, Albus would

rather not have a son at all. Otherwise, the Hutton family's hard-

eamed reputation would be ruined by his hands

Theodore seemed distracted. The shout jolted him. He stared

blankly for a moment before slowly turning toward Diana.

“How did she disappear?"

“Shouldn't | be asking you that?" Diana shot back. She clearly

believed he had helped her escape.

With every member of the family staring at him, Theodore felt

cornered and flustered. "How would | know?"

"Just answer the question,” Albus pressed, his sharp gaze

pinning him in place. "Were you involved?"

Theodore fell silent. Under Florence's calm, unreadable stare,

regret flickered across his face. "I only heard she wasn't feeling

well. | used some connections to arrange bail and had someone

----

take her to the hospital for a checkup. As for how she vanished, |

truly don't know.”

He had never imagined Megan capable of something like this.

Florence let out a short, cold laugh. "You didn't know her

medical condition?"

In more than 20 years in the Hutton household, no one had ever

mistreated Megan, not even after Vee's disappearance. A slight

headache would summon the family physician to her bedside.

She never missed an annual checkup. What illness could she

possibly have?

Theodore had considered that. "| just thought she's timid. She's

lived comfortably for years. Being taken to a police station so

suddenly would frighten anyone.”

“And now?" Diana cut in. "Do you still think she's timid?”

Someone bold enough to flee under police supervision did not

lack courage

Albus was livid. He grabbed the ashtray as if to hurl it, then

forced himself to stop. He rose abruptly, pointed at his son, and

thundered, "How did I raise such a fool? She nearly killed your

own biological daughter, and you're sympathizing with her?"

After arriving in Jouleston the night before, he had thoroughly

investigated the matter. The poisoning of Eliana had clearly

----

targeted Sydney. Yet this foolish son had helped an attempted

murderer escape

Theodore endured the scolding without daring to argue. "Dad—"

"Diana." Florence had no patience left for him. She turned

directly to her daughter. "Call Julian immediately. Tell him what

happened."

Megan had resented Vee since childhood. She had failed once

yesterday. Now that she was on the run, no one knew what she

might attempt from the shadows.
