Chapter 622

At this hour, Jouleston was still wide awake. The streets

hummed with traffic and restless noise.

Raymond had arranged only a single driver to take Penelope

away. She did not object. As long as they stopped confining her

and did not block her from marrying back into the Hamptons,

that was enough.

‘So much for valuing Sydney, the long-lost daughter. The

Huttons do not seem to take her seriously at all.’ The thought

drew a faint curve to Penelope's lips.

Over the past few years, Sydney had endured relentless bullying.

Even after she was found, the Huttons showed little concern.

Penelope turned her gaze to the window, then felt a sudden

unease.

"Did you take a wrong turn?" she asked. "If you don't know the

way, turn on the GPS."

The driver did not look at her. He said nothing and continued

straight ahead, with no sign of changing course.

Her temper flared. "Are you deaf? Raymond told you to take me

to the Hamptons. If you go this way, how long do you think it'll

take to get there?"

----

No matter what, she had once been the Hamptons’ eldest

daughter-in-law. She knew the routes to the Hampton estate

well, and none of them passed this way.

The car stopped at a red light. The driver finally glanced back,

impatience plain on his face. "When did Mr. Hutton say | was

taking you to the Hamptons?"

Her nerves snapped taut. "What do you mean? Where are you

taking me?”

‘The Huttons still have connections in government. If they have

any restraint at all, they won't dare do anything extreme.’ With

that thought, she forced her expression into a stern mask.

“What exactly are you trying to do? Don't forget who | am. If you

lay a hand on me.." Her voice stayed firm, but fear crept in all

the same.

She grabbed the door handle and yanked. It would not budge.

"Relax," the driver said flatly. "No one wants to dirty their hands.

Didn't we say it already? We're sending you off to enjoy life ina

wealthy family.”

He watched her panic with cool indifference. "Our employers

have always believed in repaying grudges with virtue.”

That steadied her a little. "But this isn't the way to the Hamptons.

----

"It's a wealthy family," the driver replied lightly as the light turned

green and he pressed the accelerator. “But no one ever said it

was the Hamptons."

She stared at him. "Then which one?"

“Sending you off properly. Doing a good deed to the end." His

tone never changed. "We're finding your child his biological

father, the fourth Wolfen heir.”

Penelope's eyes flew open. Her mind went blank. She replayed

her conversation with Raymond at Seraph Villa. From beginning

to end, he had never once said the words "Hampton family.”

‘How could this be? Why?!

She snapped back to herself, eyes bloodshot as she glared at

the driver. "Where's Diana? She clearly said she'd let me go back

to the Hamptons!"

The driver remained unmoved. "Ms. Diana said that if the

Hamptons came to propose, you could go back."

But the Hamptons never came.

"Why didn't Adeline come?’ Her head buzzed. She could not

make sense of it, but one thing was clear. She could not go to

the Wolfens.

----

Eric was a pervert. That one encounter alone had nearly

destroyed her.

Achill ran through her. She clawed at the door lock in a frenzy. "

I'm not going to the Wolfens. Let me out. Let me out!"

She would absolutely not go.

Why did her life have to rot this completely, while Sydney always

managed to land on her feet?
