Chapter 635

Sydney's voice remained soft and steady, yet every word settled

deep inside Julian and took root.

He lowered his gaze to her luminous, watery eyes and felt

warmth flood his chest.

How could she be this lovable?

Sydney missed little. When she sensed his breathing grow

heavier, she warned at once, "Control yourself. Not now..."

Ata time like this, any recklessness could affect the baby.

Amusement flickered in his eyes at her caution. He pinched her

cheek lightly. "What exactly is going on in that head of yours? Do

you take me for some kind of animal?”

As if he would lose control when he knew her body could not

handle it. He had only been thinking how undeserving he was to

have met someone like her.

Sydney touched her nose and replied with perfect composure, "I

was just kindly reminding you."

"Yes, yes. You are the kindest." He ruffled her hair, then lay

beside her and drew her into his arms. "Go to sleep."

----

She nestled against him and closed her eyes. Exhaustion

weighed on her, yet sleep refused to come.

After a moment, she shifted in his embrace. "Do you think Alan

seemed a little strange today? As if he was angry at me, but not

the way he used to be

Worry lingered in her voice. She could not pinpoint what felt

wrong, or whether she had imagined it.

The hand resting on her back paused, then resumed its slow,

soothing strokes.

“He wasn't angry," Julian said gently. "He was heartbroken."

“Heartbroken?” she repeated, her thoughts still hazy.

“Mm." He rested his chin lightly on the crown of her head. "When

| walked him out, that old man who prides himself on never

showing weakness had bloodshot eyes."

Though teasing colored his tone, Sydney did not smile. After a

long silence, she pressed her lips together. "He must think my

condition is because of him and Eliana.”

Not only heartache, but guilt. Her involvement had led to Alan's

wife being poisoned. Instead of blaming her, her mentor blamed

himself.

----

That stubborn old man carried too much pride to admit his

feelings outright. He would likely return home and brood in

silence for days.

Julian knew her well. "So now you plan to inherit the same habit

and feel guilty with him?"

If it were someone she disliked, she would not spare a thought

even if they hanged themselves. When it came to those who

truly loved her, she weighed every detail.

She shot him a look. "I'm just thinking about what to do."

“And?" he prompted. "Have you thought of something?”

She nodded. "I'll call Eliana and ask her to talk to him. He listens

to her most.”

Julian raised a brow in approval. "Mm. | listen to you most.”

“Shameless.”

When the Huttons returned to Seprath Villa, the heavy gloom

that had shadowed the house for days finally lifted.

As they stepped out of the car, Theodore took the wheelchair

from a maid.

----

No one brushed him aside this time, so he let out a quiet breath. "

So you're not angry with me anymore?"

Florence did not answer. She turned to look at Raymond instead.

The staff had already told her about the scuffle between father

and son the day before. That was what had truly angered her.

As for Theodore defending Megan, she had expected nothing

less.

Raymond smiled faintly and, as if in passing, lodged a

complaint. "I'm fine. Thick skin. The handprint he left on my face

was gone by last night."

His voice carried just enough. Albus and Elizabeth, who had

nearly reached the entrance, both turned back.

After Vee's disappearance, Raymond had become the youngest

treasure of the family. Everyone doted on him, especially

Elizabeth.

She hurried over and examined her grandson's handsome face

with care before fixing Theodore with a cold stare. "You hit Ray?

And why, exactly?!" 71
