Chapter 639
After hanging up, Julian turned and walked back into the study.
As he closed the glass door to the balcony, he lifted his gaze
and saw Sydney standing there.
He was not surprised. Treated like a national treasure at home,
she had finally wrested the task of delivering coffee from Elliot.
She set the cup on his desk and asked, "What happened? What
do you mean, ‘clear conscience'?”
She had only caught fragments of the conversation, but she
heard the sharp edge in his tone. There had even been a trace of
anger.
Julian looked at her. The irritation in his chest eased, replaced
by something heavier and softer.
He crossed the room in a few strides and rubbed her head. "
What could have happened? Nothing's wrong.”
He would not let anything happen to her again.
As for the Huttons, their decision did not matter. If they treated
her well, he would welcome more people loving her. If they
failed her, then whether she acknowledged them or not, he
would never force her either way. No matter the outcome, he
would always be her fallback.
----
For some reason, Sydney caught a note of coaxing in his voice.
She met his gaze steadily. "Really nothing?”
Something felt off, and she sensed it had to do with her.
Julian did not look away. After a pause, he asked instead, "Right
now, what's the most important thing to you?"
She blinked, caught off guard. Before this baby, the most
important thing had been uncovering the truth about her
adoptive parents’ deaths and avenging them. Later, she had
wanted to learn about her origins and find her biological parents.
But last night, when the pain in her abdomen had nearly broken
her, she had only one thought: ‘Let her child arrive safely in this
world.’
She wanted to be a good mother. She wanted a family, a child

with Julian.
It might have been selfish, but before the baby was born, she did
not want to gamble with its safety again. She only wanted to
protect her child first.
She lifted her eyes. "The baby."
"Exactly," Julian said softly. "So nothing else matters. Nothing
that should affect your mood."
----
Alan had not explicitly told him that Sydney could not travel, but
he had emphasized that at this stage, beyond avoiding physical
strain, her emotions had to remain steady.
She often reassured him, relying on her identity as a doctor and
insisting that she and the baby were fine. In truth, the situation
was not as stable as she made it sound. One misstep could end
the pregnancy.
After seeing Alan off, Julian had remained unsettled
Sydney was now even more certain that something had
happened, but she did not press him. If he chose not to tell her,
he had to have his reasons. She trusted that whatever it was, he
would always put her first.
"Then let's divide the work," she said lightly. "I'll focus on taking
good care of the baby. You handle everything else."
The trust in her bright eyes reminded him of the years when they
had once been inseparable.
His gaze softened. "All right. We'll divide the work.”
Meanwhile, at the hospital...
Raymond was midway through processing his resignation when
a doctor stricken with acute gastroenteritis pulled him into the
operating room as emergency reinforcement.
----
He had no idea that the sister he was about to reclaim had
nearly been pushed farther away by their father's actions.
By the time the surgery ended and he returned to his office, the
sun had already set.
"After today, you'll be Mr. Raymond Hutton of the Hutton Group,
not Dr. Hutton | can bully into extra shifts," the ailing doctor
joked weakly from his chair.
Raymond picked up his water cup and took a measured sip. "
Relax. With my brother still in charge, it won't be that easy for
me to become ‘Mr. Raymond Hutton.”
James had worked diligently in the group for years and was still
addressed that way. What title was there for him to claim?
A light knock sounded at the office door. A newly hired HR intern
stepped in. "Dr. Hutton, please sign this document. Once you do,
your resignation process will be complete."
“All right." He set down his cup and strode over.
As he reached for the document, something at the edge of his
vision caught his attention.
He froze. Their eyes met,
For a split second, surprise flashed across Tiffany's face.

Almost immediately, she slipped back into her usual carefree
expression. Her red lips curved into a casual smile. ‘What a
coincidence.”
She did not wait for him to respond. She turned and walked
away.
