In other people's eyes, their family backgrounds alone had

doomed the relationship from the start. It was unequal, unlikely

to end well.

So when the Huttons first approached her and slid a high-value

check across the table, Tiffany had wavered for a split second.

She understood the world's hierarchy. She simply refused to

believe that coming from a weaker family made her time and

feelings worth less.

Something flickered in Raymond's eyes at her words. Then he

gave a self-mocking laugh. "You think that's how I see it?"

He heard the unspoken warning clearly. She was telling him not

to toy with her feelings.

Tiffany did not budge. She coolly tossed the question back. "If

not, then what?"

If there was no future for them, why did he keep showing up?

Tiffany saw no need to explain herself. "Great. I'll count on your

wedding gift to fund my retirement."

She stepped back half a pace and slammed the door shut. The

heavy bang echoed down the hallway.

Outside, Raymond almost laughed in frustration.

He turned and strode home. The resignation approval letter lay

on the coffee table.

He lifted his leg and kicked the corner hard. "Resign my ass."

The irritation had barely begun to fade when the phone he had

tossed onto the sofa rang again.

“Ray.

He answered, voice clipped. "What?"

The Huttons were used to his temper.

On the other end, James raised a brow. "Your resignation's not

"You could say that.”

The paperwork had gone smoothly. Everything after that had not.

James heard the frustration but did not press. "One piece of

good news, one piece of bad news. Which do you want first?"

Raymond did not hesitate. "Good news."

He preferred to let someone else volunteer the bad.

"You won't need to start from the grassroots,” James said, direct

as ever. "Once you join, you'll report straight to my office."

He'd be the Vice President of the Hutton Group from day one, by

Albus’ order.

Raymond blinked, caught off guard. His mind flashed back to

Tiffany's question.

The words slipped out before he could stop them. "So does that

mean | can decide my own marriage now?"

That had been the whole reason he had resigned from the

hospital.

A brief silence ensued.

“You might want to ask our sister that." James sounded faintly

Now Raymond fell silent. He had no intention of presenting

himself to Diana for a scolding. She was far less forgiving than

James. One word from her to Albus, and he might find himself

reassigned to some remote subsidiary.

He pushed the thought aside. "What's the bad news?"

He had not wanted to hear it, but he already sensed the two

were connected.

“Megan fled." James summarized the situation in a few

sentences. "So Grandpa stripped Dad of his power."

Raymond's brows drew tight. "Does Julian know?"

Like the rest of the family, his first thought was Sydney.

James nodded. "He probably knew before we did.”
