Chapter 2 Chapter 2 I slid down the stone pillar and sat on the floor, reaching back to touch my head. My fingertips came away sticky and red. I used to be his "exception." A mixed-blood who couldn't even shift properly during full moons should never have crossed paths with the Alpha of the Vale Pack. Until that night in the port district when I found him bleeding out in an alley. Some drunk rogues had jumped him with a silver blade. The cut went deep, right to the bone. Nobody else was around, and he was fading fast.
I dragged him back to the old bookstore's attic, spent four days trying every dangerous method I'd read about in ancient books, brewing herbs that even the old shop owner was scared to touch, forcing the liquid through his clenched teeth drop by drop. He lived. But his back kept a twisted scar that never faded. "Thanks," he said when he woke up, leaning against the headboard with morning light on his pale face. "I owe you a life, Nora Sinclair." That's how it started. Then came his relentless pursuit. He showed up everywhere.
Late nights when I was sorting inventory, he'd walk in and drop a ring with the family crest on the dusty counter. "Come with me. You don't belong in a place like this." I said: "No, thank you. I work hard for my living, and I don't find it burdensome." Next day, he bought every old scroll and dried herb in the store just to free up my time. When I carried supply boxes through the gross fish market alleys, he'd walk half a step behind me, letting his expensive boots sink into the mud.
I told him we were from completely different worlds, but one afternoon he rolled up his sleeves and helped me sort poisonous plants from medicinal ones in the yard. It wasn't like I felt nothing. I just knew better than anyone that mixed-bloods and pure-blood Alphas don't get fairy tale endings. Until that bottle of acid meant for me hit his back instead. The smell of burning skin filled the air. He was in so much pain his temples were bulging, but he still tried to smile at me. "Now we belong to the same world, Nora." All my walls came crashing down.

Json formatter error Being with him felt like a dream. He'd call the family healers for a tiny cut on my finger, buy entire workshops because I said something nice about their products. Once I just tripped on some steps and he freaked out, eyes going red as he carried me to the clinic like I was about to die. 11.20 You Want Me Back? Too Had My Alpha-I'm Done Waiting 0.2% Chapter 2 "I know medicine," I'd tell him. "That's different," he'd say, stubborn as hell. "You can't see yourself bleeding." Now I'm sitting alone on a cold plastic chair in the hospital hallway.
The bandage on my head is soaked through with blood, and I keep getting dizzy. The disinfectant can't cover the heavy smell of my own blood. Footsteps came toward me, fast and heavy. Then my wrist got grabbed hard. "You followed us here?" Declan's voice was low and icy. "Cassia just stabilized and you still won't quit?" I looked up into his bloodshot eyes. The anger and suspicion there were so real it almost made me laugh. "The hospital isn't just for her." I pointed at the bloody bandage on my forehead. "I'm hurt, Declan. Thanks to you." He froze.
His eyes finally landed on that mess of white gauze and red blood, pupils shrinking fast. Like he was just now seeing me, seeing what happened when he shoved me into that stone pillar. "How did this happen?" His voice cracked. "You pushed me." I smiled. "Into the pillar. Probably didn't even think about it, right?" Panic flashed across his face. He let go of my wrist, then reached for my cheek like he regretted it. "Nora, I didn't mean-" "Yeah, you were just worried about her." I finished the speech for him.
"Worried about the 'legal heir' in her belly, worried about what the elders would say, worried about our 'great escape plan' getting pushed back again. I get it." I stood up. The dizziness made me wobble. He tried to steady me but I pulled away. "Go take care of her," I said. "Don't worry about me." When I turned to leave, he grabbed me again. "Nora. You have to trust me." He stared into my eyes. "You're the only one in my heart. This is all temporary, all so I can get you out of here!" Temporary. Nice word. Like pretty fabric covering up all the ugly compromises and betrayals.
"Barnaby will drive you home." He let go, voice back to that usual controlling tone. "Keep the wound dry. I'll bring you hazelnut rolls later." Then he turned and walked toward that guarded room at the end of the hall. Never looked back. I stood there watching him disappear behind that heavy door. From inside came soft crying and his voice, all gentle now as he comforted her. Weird thing was, that empty ache in my chest didn't hurt anymore. I even laughed a little, though tears were falling at the same time, sliding into my mouth all salty and cold. Good.
