Chapter 63 I squint grumpily at the glaring sun as I limp back to the GAZ sorority house, wishing it was still raining. Greek Row looks like a ghost town. Empty cars parked on both sides of the street. Not a single student to be seen. There's not even a breeze blowing this crisp fall morning. Despite which, I'm still expecting a ball of tumbleweed to bounce across the street up ahead. I asked Kai to set his alarm two hours before my shift starts so I'd have enough time to get ready. I guess everyone's still in bed, recovering. Even the cops are gone.

Although there's no one around, I feel too conspicuous out here. Could be the football jersey I'm wearing like a dress. My messy hair. My bare feet, one crudely bandaged. Like the sole survivor of a zombie apocalypse, limping away into the unknown after an evening of headshotting the undead. As if every limping step of my walk of shame is being monitored, my disheveled state recorded, every bad choice I've ever made, judged. Because that's exactly what's happening. I spin to the side, hands on my hips. "I'm not five anymore!" I yell. To the casual observer, my sanity appears shredded.

Until someone steps out of the bushes beside one of the frat houses. Kai doesn't even bother looking ashamed as he stares at me across the deserted street. "Anything can happen," he calls back, shrugging. "It's broad daylight, Kai!" He squints, arms on his hips as if he's mocking me. "Should have let me walk with you." He grins, but it's too wide, with too many teeth on display. And there's a flicker in his green eyes-something defiant he's trying to smother with his signature brand of couldn't-care-less bullshit.

"Oh my God, fine!" He's already jogging across the road, grinning like an idiot. How can he possibly be so chipper? My muscles still hurt. Was it the blowjob? I smooth away a smug smile. Asshole got what he deserved. Maybe now he'll think twice about stealing my stuff. Although...putting a thumb up his ass doesn't seem like much of a punishment. As we get closer to the GAZ house, Kai grabs my wrist and tugs me to face him. "Listen, Haven, about that photo thing..." I cock my head, waiting, trying to keep my breathing as normal as possible.

But there's already an acidic heat building in my stomach, and I know it's only going to get worse the more he speaks. "If it is a fake, then-" "If?" My eyebrows shoot up to my fucking hairline. "If?" I yank my hand free and punch him in the stomach with it. Not that it does more than make him grunt and bow a little. Should've aimed lower. This update is available on find⦿novel.net I storm down the sidewalk, gritting my teeth against the pain. Every step feels like I'm standing on a nail, even when I'm hardly putting any weight on my foot.

"Haven!" I give Kai the finger without turning around. His feet slap against the paving as he comes after me at a jog and falls in step beside me again. He grabs my wrist again, turns me to him again. "I'm going to see Ezra at the hospital." Green eyes the color of new moss narrow as he searches my face. "Come with me." There's venom in my laugh. "Not enough money in the fucking world," I spit, tugging my hand free. Trying to. He's holding on a lot tighter than before. "Please." "Fuck that." I flick the fingers of my other hand at him like I'm shooing a fly.

"I told you, I've got stuff to do." Kai looks away, jaw clenching. "I'll come see you after then. Tell you what we-" "Don't bother." I shake my head. "He'll have you all brainwashed again." Damn, I didn't wake up with a hangover, but either the sun or Kai's stupidity is giving me a blistering headache. "I just want to figure out what-" "Yeah, whatever, Kai." I wave him away as I hobble toward GAZ again. "You do you, boo." This time, he doesn't follow me. When I glance over my shoulder, he's just standing there like an adorable lost puppy. Am I the asshole? Yes. Yes, I am. Do I care?

Not one fucking bit. I need sleep, a handful of aspirin, and all three wishes from a genie to get me out of this shitshow. The front door is locked, and since I don't have my key with me, I use the spare key to let myself into the kitchen. There were no police cruisers or campus security golf carts outside, so I'm guessing they've done what they needed to do. I don't care either way-I'm picking up my clothes and those painkillers, getting the Land Rover, and heading over to the strip mall. I'll clean up in the public restroom like I've done so many times before.

The hush inside the sorority house creeps me out. I'd be sprinting up the stairs if I could, but I'm resigned to limping up them one at a time, leaning heavily on the railing to keep my weight off my injured foot. The stairs are a challenge, but I take them-literally-in my stride. Now my foot's really starting to ache, but I can take the weight off when I've reached my room. Gritting my teeth, I hobble down the hall, gaining momentum by the time I've reached the end. Which all fizzles out when I see the yellow tape on the door.

POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS The top left part of the X has come loose, leaving enough room for me to step over without disturbing the rest of the tape. No one will even know I was here. But as soon as I'm inside my room, I realize what a fat waste of time this was. I came here to fetch my things...but there's nothing to fetch. Kai destroyed everything. "There's my sweet girl." I whirl around, jerking in shock as Bastian steps out of the shadows behind the door. Sharp panic spears through me when we lock eyes. He smirks and tilts his head as he gives me a slow once-over.

Despite my hangover, despite my exhaustion, every hair on my body stands on end like they're applauding the jump scare he just gave me. Well, fuck. Either this is one big coincidence, or he's been waiting for me. Which means...my professor is stalking me. I immediately doubt myself because...really? But then he slides his hand over the wood and silently closes the door. "You can try to run from me," he murmurs, his eyes sliding down to my bare legs and working their way slowly back up.

"You can even try to hide." I retreat when he advances on me, taking barely three steps before I crash into the nightstand. "But this is always how it will end, girl. You, with me."
