Chapter 21 "You're stalling, aren't you?" Kai hisses in my ear. "I don't know where he keeps them." I glower at him. "Told you to stay outside." I shove his chest, trying to get some space between us. He's been inches behind me ever since we slipped back inside the house to look for my car keys. It's made it impossible to think...and I have so much shit to think about. We've already searched the living area and the kitchen. Only options left are Professor Rooke's study and his bedroom. Now we're clustered together near the front door, both bristling with frustration.

I let out an irritated huff. "We should split up-" "Yeah, I've seen this movie before. Only the chick survives." Kai points to the study. "There." He moves his finger towards Bastian's bedroom. "Then there." He sidles off toward the study, and I force myself to follow. That room creeps me out. Not just the weird artwork, but whatever might be behind that secret door. I know it's going to distract Kai. He's been making up mysteries ever since we were kids.

Whenever we found something weird in the woods-a slip of paper, an abandoned wallet, rusted tin cans-he'd make up some elaborate story about a kidnapping gone wrong, or fugitives hiding from the police. What's he going to say about Bastian's study? Kai steps into the passage. I'm about to follow when movement catches my eye. I turn to look and on instinct, snatch Kai's wrist, digging my nails into his skin to signal him to stop. "Jesus, what..." He trails off when he sees my face, and slowly steps back into the main living area.

Bastian leans against the edge of the partition dividing his bedroom from the rest of the house. He's in sweatpants and a black cotton robe that exposes a generous slice of his toned chest and abs. Looking all calm and controlled, despite his bruised, cut lip where Kai bit him. If it hurts, he doesn't show it. "Not even a note?" he asks, one side of his mouth quirking up into an almost-smile. "I'm insulted." I'm sure I should be having all sorts of feelings and questions right now, but all I can think about is how both these men claimed pieces of me last night that I'll never get back.

I mean, Bastian forced Kai to take my virginity...while he watched. And then he got a piece of the action too. But it's as if someone cracked open my skull and scooped out all my brains. There's one feeling that's coming up, though. I'm ready to give up breathing just to watch Bastian strip out of that- Kai steps in front of me, blocking out Bastian...and all the dirty thoughts I was about to have. It would've been a sweet gesture, him protecting me, but it feels condescending. I can look after myself. Have been for fucking years.

My eyes climb up his back, taking in every damp, tensed muscle. He's gotten more scars since I last saw him. From contact sports, or Ezra's fists? We have so much to talk about. But Kai doesn't want to talk. He just wants to fuck or fight. "You think we're going to hang around after the shit you pulled, you psychotic cunt?" Kai's voice is a low, threatening rasp. Bastian's reply is a smooth and calm. "Sounds like someone's serotonin levels are woefully depleted." He enters the kitchen, turning his back on us to open the fridge.

"The human brain only produces about ten milligrams of serotonin a day. It'll take days for you to return to baseline, depending on how much MDMA you took." Kai gives me a quick glance over his shoulder, widening his green eyes meaningfully at me. But whatever he's trying to convey, I don't fucking get it. I shrug up at him. "What?" I whisper. "Get your keys from him," he hisses, grabbing my arm and practically shoving me toward the kitchen. So much for protecting me. He's ready to feed me to the lion as long as he gets out of the den alive.

Bastian turns, containers of fresh fruit and veggies piled in his arms. I open my mouth to ask for my keys, but he shifts his gaze to the kitchen stools and says, "I'll call you two an Uber. But first, let's try to mitigate the oxidative stress you've put on your poor neurons, shall we?" I seriously don't need his psychobabble right now. And I'm not even hungry. But the stuff he lays out on the table looks so vibrant and healthy. And here I am, leeched of color like a cut under a wet bandaid. The little resistance I'd scrounged up fades. Kai snatches my wrist, but I tug free and keep walking.

"You kidding me right now?" he whispers. "Come, stay. I don't give a fuck," I say, pulling a face. He glares at me until I look away, but when I slide onto the kitchen stool, he reluctantly takes the seat beside me. Bastian is already chopping up some bananas, eyes fixed on the knife as it slices the fruit, seemingly oblivious to the two of us. I could care less what Kai thinks. I don't say no to free food. "Was it just MDMA you two took last night?" Kai leans his arms on the counter, hands latched onto his elbows. It makes his biceps bulge, and I wonder if that's on purpose. Some kind of challenge thrown at Bastian. After last night, anything's possible. Nope. Not thinking about that right now. "You forget about the coke?" he says, flicking damp hair out of his eyes with a snap of his neck. I squirm at the memory of them snorting lines of the stuff off my ass cheeks. "As if I could," Bastian chuckles. "Well, suffice to say, your brain's reward system is utterly fucked." He glances at me.

"You're a bit better off." I wince as he turns on the blender, the high-pitched shriek of the motor reverberating inside my skull. Clapping my hands over my ears only helps some, but Kai just clenches his jaw and bears it, his eyes throwing daggers at Bastian. "You seem fine. Guess you do this kind of thing often," Kai says as soon as the blender stops. Bastian pours out the smoothies, dark eyes flicking over to Kai for a second. "You referring to the drugs, or the sex?" When he doesn't get an answer, Bastian chuckles again, running a tongue over his split lip like he's savoring the pain.

And reminding us who gave him the injury. I swear I can hear Kai's teeth grinding. Bastian slides a glass over the marble countertop. If Kai hadn't caught it, it would have gone crashing to the floor. Professor Rooke takes my glass and walks around the kitchen island, coming to stand beside me as he sets it down on the counter. "Drink," he commands, his eyes flickering to the glass.

"You don't know how desperately your body needs this." I'm not sure if it's Bastian's sudden proximity, or the double meaning in his words, but my body is definitely needy right now, if the tingle between my thighs is anything to go by. Kai makes an angry sound when I lift the glass to my lips. That's why I obey Bastian-I know it'll piss off Kai. It's childish, but I feel like I'm owed a temper tantrum or two after the way he's treated me. The dark green smoothie smells delicious, and I don't even taste the spinach.

But as much as I'd like to enjoy the drink, it's too demanding keeping both men in my peripheral view. I feel like a deer at a waterhole, eyeing two predators at once. Kai doesn't touch his smoothie. He's more intent on glaring at Bastian, even though our professor is ignoring him as he watches me drink his concoction. There's a deep satisfaction in his eyes when I drain my glass. I flinch at his touch when he drags a clump of damp hair over my shoulder. "You've been running around in the rain again." He plucks at the damp hoodie. "It's a miracle neither of you ended up with pneumonia.

You'll shower and change into some warm clothes before you leave." It's not a suggestion. I look up at him, tipping back my head. Kai is right, he doesn't even seem hungover. His dark brown eyes are bright, barely any shadows under them. The stubble on his jaw makes him look rakish, not unkempt. And while he smells like blood and sweat and cum, it's a faint aroma that's nearly overpowered by his own scent. There must still be a hint of the drugs in my system, because fuck me, that smell is intoxicating. He's intoxicating.

The soft, sumptuous lips that kissed me and trailed over my skin last night curl into a smirk when my gaze lands on them. Bastian trails his knuckle along the line of my jaw. "Keep looking at me like that, sweet girl, and I'll lash you to the bed." "Just give us her car keys," Kai snaps behind me. There's a snap of tension between us when Bastian's gaze shifts to Kai. "Tell you what, boy," he says with a small smile, his hand sliding around the back of my neck.

"Drink that smoothie, and I'll let you watch me fuck her in the ass." My eyes flutter closed as his fingers delve into my hair, sending shivers rippling through my body. Fuck, that feels good. Kai's chair scrapes over the floor. My eyes fly open, a gasp rattling out of my throat when light glances off the blade of the knife Bastian was using to chop up the fruit. Kai has it angled against Bastian's throat, sharp edge nudging the bottom of his jaw.

I blurt out, "What are you-" "We're leaving." Kai pushes the words through his teeth as he steps a little closer, caging me in between him and Bastian. I scramble out from under Kai's corded arm, swiping hair from my face with shaking hands. "Put it down, Kai." Shit, my voice is shaking just as much. "Please." If Professor Rooke is scared, he doesn't show it. He just keeps looking at Kai with the same dark, hungry stare he had me pinned with just seconds ago. "I'm not keeping you here against your will," Bastian says, the corner of his mouth quirking into a smile.

"You're free to leave at any-" "Shut your fucking mouth!" Kai barks. He grabs the stool I'd been sitting on and tosses it to the side. I yelp, barely dodging when it clatters toward me over the floor. Bastian slowly lifts his hands, palms facing Kai, but there's still not an ounce of unease on his face. "Night stand drawer." Kai's throat moves as he swallows, but he doesn't take his eyes off Bastian. "Go, Haven." But my feet are frozen in place, my heart knocking so hard in my chest I might break a rib. "Haven, go!" Kai yells. "Okay. Okay!" My hands fly up too as I back off.

Moisture floods my eyes, panic shooting fierce tingles through my fingers and toes as I turn and run into Bastian's bedroom. I try not to look at the blood-streaked sheets on the once pristine white bed where I lost my virginity last night. Some details are crisp and razor sharp. Others just blurry suggestions. Things that may or may not have happened at all. But when Kai growled, "Mine," like a savage, and fucked me while I still lying on top of Bastian... My pussy tingles at the memory of that pain. How good it felt. How they made it hurt even more, and how fucking sublime that felt.

They didn't just take my flower. They ripped it out of the soil and took turns plucking off the petals, one by one. And I fucking loved watching them fight over who got to destroy me. Keys, Haven. Stop daydreaming and find your fucking keys. Bastian's nightstand drawer rolls open silently when I tug it. I stare into its dark depths, my eyes taking a moment to focus on the objects inside. My mouth goes dry. The keys jingle as I slowly lift them out. The gun doesn't make a sound. Freedom in the palm of my hand. And absolute power in the other.

For the first time-possibly ever-I have a fucking choice. Run like a scared little girl...or get revenge. I wrap my fingers around the collar, pulling it away so I can take in a long, calming breath. This is insane. I need to get the hell out of this house, the hell away from Kai and Bastian and everything else that keeps wanting to pull me under. But that brief flicker of sanity evaporates at a vivid memory. Then another. Another. The clatter of metal on metal. A padlock snapped closed. The clatter of metal on metal. A belt drawn free. The clatter of metal on metal.

A gun landing on the hood of a car.
