Chapter 22 "Find 'em?" Kai yells from the kitchen. My body jerks, the gun falling back into the drawer with a thud. "Yes! Here!" I bleat, swallowing hard as I jangle the bunch of keys. Kai is speaking to Bastian, but too low for me to make out. Or maybe it's the low whine in my ears as I stare down at the gun, I don't know. When I enter the living area again, Kai still has Bastian at his mercy. I get close enough to see a thin line of blood on his neck where the blade must have cut him. Bastian's eyes flicker to me, then my hand. "Are you sure that's a good idea?" he asks.

Fucking calm as can be, when I'm shaking so hard my collar's chain is rattling. Kai gives me a double take. "What the fuck are you doing?" I can't tell if it's anger or panic on his face, or a mix of the two. The gun dips before I straighten my arm again. "Put the knife down." Kai scans the gun, my face, my body like he's trying to convince himself that I'm not real. "That even loaded?" Before I can answer him, Bastian says, "Put the safety back on, Haven." I turn the muzzle to him. "Stop talking." Then back to Kai.

"Both of you." My hand starts shaking, so I carefully peel back my fingers before tightening them on the grip again. "Kai? Put down the knife, take my keys, and get the fuck out of here." But Kai just stares at me with big, green eyes, like he's watching a demonic possession take place right in front of him. "Now!" "Haven, I think it will do us all a world of good if you take a breath, and put down the-" Bastian begins. I squeeze the trigger. CRACK! Fuck, and I thought the blender was loud.

I almost lose my grip on the gun when the recoil hits, my entire body jerking at the ear-splitting sound. Both of them jump too, and if Kai had still been keeping that blade flush with Bastian's throat, there'd be a lot more blood flowing right now. I stare at the hole in Bastian's front door, my heart trying to pound its way out of my chest through my rib cage. Then I swing the gun back to them. They both duck, and Kai quickly tosses the knife on the floor. It spins in my direction, coming to a halt halfway between us.

Adrenaline chases through my veins, sending waves of shivers through my body. "Good boy," I say through clenched teeth, earning myself a hard glare from Kai and a quirked mouth from Bastian. I toss Kai my car keys. Lick my lips. Wince when that makes my damaged lower lip sting. The outside of my mouth is bad enough, but I can feel just how badly I chewed the inside last night. At least it's healing. "It's a little tricky getting it into reverse," I say. "If it doesn't want to take, just let out the clutch and try again." Kai's lips quiver for a second before he tightens them.

"I'm not leaving you here with-" "You pulled a fucking knife, Kai," I snap. "Think I'm getting in a car with you?" "You're holding a fucking gun, Haven," he retorts dryly. I make an irritated sound as I gesture toward the door with the gun. "Go." Updates are released by Find1Novel.net The muscle along Kai's jaw tightens as he slowly steps toward the door, turning to keep his eyes on me. "Come with me." "I'll take my chances." The gun is already slippery with sweat. Kai pushes out his chin, anger lighting a fire in his eyes as he shakes his head.

"Use your head," he mutters, throwing Bastian a death glare. "Don't you realize soon as I'm gone, he's going to try something? Or is that what you want?" "Keep insulting her, boy," Bastian says. "That'll change her mind." "Insult...?" Kai trails off with a growl. "You shut the fuck-" "You shut up," I cut in, storming closer to Kai. "First you treat me like shit, then you act like I'm made of glass. I don't need you looking after me. I don't even know why you care.

You made it abundantly fucking clear that you don't give a shit about me the second I arrived on campus." I use the gun to articulate every point. It doesn't go unnoticed, if Kai's slowly widening eyes is anything to go by. There's movement in my periphery. Bastian coming closer, arms loose at his side, a faint smile on his lips. "Seems he's been getting away with far too much for far too long," Bastian says as he stops less than a foot from me, something sinister gleaming in his dark eyes.

"You should balance the scales." "I fucking should," I mutter, glaring at Kai as I tighten my hand on the gun, hoping that will help with the shaking. Kai's gaze flickers from me to Bastian, then he takes a quick step back. And another. Then he's fumbling for the door handle. "Whatever, man. I'm outta here." He tries to open the door, but it's locked. And when he looks away to figure out how to open it, Bastian lunges at me. He can be glad I saw him coming. Glad that I could control my trigger finger and not put a bullet in Kai. Or him.

Bastian rears back as I sidestep him and swing the gun away from Kai, pointing straight at Bastian's chest. "What the hell?" I yell. "Do you want me to shoot you?" Bastian licks the cut on his bottom lip, looking amused as he slowly raises his hands. "Trying to prevent anyone getting shot, actually." "And you thought sudden moves were a good idea?" I swipe my free hand over my face, dragging my hair out of my eyes. My collar's chain rattles. I toss it over my shoulder so it's out of my way, trying to ignore the way my heart's racing. I've held a gun before, but this doesn't feel the same.

Guess it's because I'm in a totally different frame of mind-angry, not scared out of my mind. "I should just shoot you both." Kai has the fucking audacity to scoff at me. "Fine by me, as long as you start with him." I blink. Tilt my head to the side. I am so sick of this. I'm holding a fucking gun, and they're still trying to control me. Men are such fucking assholes. Maybe Bastian's right. It's time I balanced the scales. Not just between me and Kai, but between all of us. They're about to learn what it feels like to be the one without power.

Run my tongue along my teeth without opening my mouth as I slowly train the gun back on him. "Know what, guys? I just had the best idea." My eyes flicker to the bedroom, then back to them. "How about we play a little game?"
