Chapter 53 Melissa's going to kill me. When I couldn't find a rock to throw through the window, I wrapped her bougie jacket around my fist and punched it out. My plan worked, but there were casualties. RIP Chanel. Maybe they'll join her Prada's in heaven, the ones I ditched when they kept snagging against foliage. Since it's already fucked, I use the wadded-up jacket to clear away the jagged shards of glass still clinging to the window frame, then reach inside to feel for a latch.
Seconds later, I'm carefully climbing through the window, trying not to cut my feet on the glass scattered on the floor inside. There's a chance Kai might follow me here. Which means I have a minute, maybe two, to figure out if there's anywhere to barricade myself... Damn it. This cabin looked a lot bigger from the outside. It's all one big open area-the kitchen, the living space, the bedroom. No separate room with a door, like I'd hoped. Except for one tiny, walled-off area in a far corner that I'm assuming is the bathroom. And that door looks mighty flimsy. Shit!
I rush to the other side of the lodge, flattening myself against the wall so I can peek through the window. The spotlight makes the shadows between the trees that much darker. Kai could be anywhere. Unless he gave up. I run to a different window and peek out. The spotlight is shining on the other side of the cabin, creating a long shadow that almost reaches the trees. That would be the best escape route, and since I've established this cabin is more a prison than a fort, I don't have a choice but to climb out and head back into the trees.
My hand goes to the latch, my lips pursing as I try to open it. It might as well have been glued shut. Fuck. I wrap Melissa's jacket around my fist, ready to smash yet another window, but pause when I see movement outside. My heart hammers in my chest as I dart back against the wall. Kai had the same idea as I did, sticking to the shadows as much as possible. Except he's not trying to escape. He's headed straight to this window. My eyes dart across the cabin, to the window I'd smashed up gaining entry.
I take a few quick breaths and bolt over the floor, weaving around the furniture like a seasoned snowboarder. Forgetting in my rush about the glass. In my defense, the shards are invisible in the puddle of darkness beneath the window. And I'm in a hurry. "Fuck!" I fall to the side, my hip crashing into a side table, thankfully pushing it aside before my head could crack on the corner. Pain shoots through the cut just below the ball of my foot. Glass shatters somewhere behind me. My lips clamp shut over another howl of pain as I stare across the room.
Kai's arm slithers over the windowsill like a python, rivulets of shadow-black blood fanning the back of his hand as he fumbles for the latch. Ha, ha, loser. That shit's not going to- The latch squeals like a stuck pig when he forces it open. Fuck! Gritting my teeth, I try to ignore the sinister throbbing in my foot as I hurriedly crawl toward the kitchen on all fours. A hinge in the window squeaks as Kai shoves it open, but any further sounds are dampened by the rain relentlessly drumming on the roof. There's a small island by the breakfast nook.
I detour around it and slip behind them, hoping Kai doesn't spot me. The spotlight illuminates a large swathe of the cabin where it floods in through the window I broke. When I peek around the edge of the counter, I see Kai standing in that orange light-so brazen, my body locks up in fear. His black sweatpants and hoodie cling wetly to him, his usually messy hair plastered down on his forehead and around his ears. Blood drips from his hand down to the floor as he slowly scans the cabin. The way he holds himself is so familiar. Fisted hands, hunched shoulders, bowed head.

I duck back behind the counter when he whips his head in my direction, like he sensed exactly where I was. Maybe he can smell the blood oozing out of me. I inch along the floor, back pressed to the counter, my eyes fixed on the closest drawer. There's got to be something in there I can use to defend myself with. A fork. A steak knife. Even a fucking cheese grater will do. "At least we're out of the rain," Kai says, and I swear there's a laugh at the edges of his voice.
"And no Rooke to tell us we're gonna catch fucking pneumonia." His bare, wet feet make soft slapping sounds as he moves his big body over the wooden floorboards. My fingertips brush a drawer handle, and I slowly ease it open before sliding my hand up, over the lip. Folded fabric, probably dish towels. Fucking useless. Well, I guess he could use it to mop up the blood after he slits my throat. Violence hangs in the air, and it reminds me of the chemical stench of meth after Uncle Lenny would heat a serving on his tinfoil.

There's a clock on the wall behind me. Only now, in the charged hush as Kai stalks across the cabin, do I hear the second hand. Tick. Tick. It's long past midnight already. Nowhere is safe for me anymore. I clench my jaw, biting back a whimper as my foot throbs in agony, the pain only now soaking through what's left of the adrenaline lacing my veins.
Carefully, quietly, I scoot over the floor and reach for another drawer. This one feels heavier. I only pray that's because there's a shit ton of knives inside. "Come out, come out, wherever you are," Kai rasps. My fingertips skate over something smooth, slick, cool. I drag it to the edge of the drawer and carefully pull it up along the side. I stare at the lighter in my palm. Just as useless as the fucking dish towels.
Maybe if Kai wasn't wet as the sack of cats we found on the banks of the creek that one time, then- "What game you wanna play tonight, Miss H?" Kai's footsteps are quieter now, as if he's creeping. "Hide and Hunt?" A floorboard creaks, and it's way, way, way too fucking close. My heart bangs painfully inside my chest, my eyes squeezing shut before I force them open. Shaking fingers reach up, slide into the drawer, hunting. "Nah. The Bandit and the Queen right? You always liked that one." I pull out an ice pick. It's cold in my hand. So gloriously heavy.
Gritting my teeth, I lay my leg flat and slip the ice pick behind the waistband of my short, black skirt. Silver thread glimmers, the luxurious fabric a strange contrast to my pale, dirty legs. No use running anymore. The only way out of this kitchen is past Kai. Or through him. He chuckles to himself, and the sound sends a chill through my body that leaves a hard shiver in its wake. The ice pick is cold against my hip and thigh, but warming up quickly. I slip the lighter behind my bra...just in case.
"How about the Quiet Game?" Kai's voice is so low, so menacing, that I almost make a run for it, anyway. My chest heaves as I fight to control my breathing. Another floorboard creaks. My eyes pop open. I stare up at Kai as he steps into the kitchen area. He looks down at me, impossibly tall, an imposing silhouette with his dark clothes and face bathed in shadows. My aching foot feels hot and stingy. The rest of my body cold, trembling. Except for one tiny piece, deep inside. Not the part of me that found an ice pick to defend myself with.
But the part of me that's so fucked up, it hid it, so Kai still thinks he has the upper hand for now. Because that part of me can't wait to see what his fucked-up mind is going to come up with next. That part is shooting excited tingles into my pussy, hoping, however this plays out, that it ends hard and rough. The first few times I felt this way, it was disturbing as fuck. What kind of girl gets off on the threat of violence and pain and being forced to do things she doesn't want to? The kind of girl who watched her father destroy her life one drug-fueled bender at a time.
Bruised apples don't fall far from the tree. "Always loved the Quiet Game," Kai murmurs as he sinks into a squat in front of me. He glances down, stares at my bleeding foot. When he reaches out, I flinch, wanting to draw away, but I force my leg straight again. Kai strokes his knuckle down the center of my bare sole. I can barely feel it compared to the pulsing pain radiating from the cut. It's only when he grabs the piece of glass that I realize it's still embedded in my foot. Not as if there was time to attend to my wound. Kai always looks after me, though.
I yell when he tugs out the glass, slumping back against the cabinet, my breath haggard. Fuck, that hurt. He strokes my foot again, staring at the wicked shard of red glass before tossing it into the nearby basin with impressive accuracy. "Remember how you'd bite your lip until it bled so you wouldn't make a sound?" The way his voice drops low, lethal, should have been a sign. But Miss H never backs down from a challenge, does she? She embraces it. When Kai grabs my ankle, holding my foot still, she grins at him, daring him. And, like always, the smile he gives back is just as wicked.
"Remember how I'd lick the blood from your mouth, and even then, you wouldn't make a sound?" But it's Haven who screams when he presses his thumb on that deep cut, and Haven that kicks his hand off her, and Haven that scrambles up, shoving him so he falls onto his back. "That's one, Miss H!" But it's Haven who hobbles toward the window, because she's finally come to her senses and realized this isn't just a game anywhere. That Kai's not just going to tickle her until she cries Uncle, or pinch her until she's purple and blue.
Kai's all grown up, and he's going to wanna do grown-up things to her. So Haven runs. But Kai catches her before she can escape.
