Rousse's attack sank into a cloud of cold mist, but what he saw through the haze froze him completely. Like in slow motion, he saw Meridiana falling off the edge, still inside Celia's body. She seemed dazed from the direct blow of the spell's power.

Celia's eyes turned white, as if Meridiana was screaming from within, but she was inevitably falling into the abyss. ---- That image, losing his beloved, his mate, triggered memories in the general that had been forcefully buried. Arapid flashback showed him back when he was still a man full of vitality and kindness. He lived ina village tucked away in the mountains, a hidden refuge from the evil plaguing the realm.

So much so that he eventually befriended a lazy young vampire who once came to his workshop asking for two swords. But when he reached his little wooden house, the door hanging off its hinges and flames licking the walls and roof, his world completely shattered. His mate, his pregnant wife, had been taken prisoner, along with the others, to the mansion of those degenerate vampires.
