You Were My Favorite Hurt, And My Hardest Goodbye by Ava Knight 91 Summary Genevieve remained quiet as Matteo drove them to the hospital, his anger still simmering beneath a more controlled exterior. She wanted to explain why she had gone to meet Michele but sensed Matteo wasn't in the right state to listen. When they arrived, Genevieve followed Matteo through the hospital corridors, puzzled about their purpose there since the floor was for non-emergent cases, and she didn't expect Beatrice to be there. Matteo's presence caused a stir among the nurses, who were visibly affected by his charm.
After being led into an empty room, Matteo helped Genevieve change into a hospital gown, his touch both tender and possessive. Their moment was interrupted by a knock at the door, and Matteo warned the visitor not to enter until they were ready. Once prepared, Matteo invited the doctor in, who introduced himself as Dr. Richards. The doctor acknowledged Matteo with a nod about a previous incident involving blood and confirmed they were there for a subdermal chip implantation, an outpatient procedure. During the initial exam, Matteo became uncomfortable with Dr.
Richards' hands moving over Genevieve's upper chest and firmly requested that a female doctor perform the procedure. Dr. Richards protested but Matteo stood his ground, reminding the doctor of his family's significant donations to the hospital and demanding respect for Genevieve as his fiancée. The doctor reluctantly agreed to find a female physician, and Matteo settled back, confident they had time to wait. The chapter ends with a tense but respectful exchange between the characters.
Continue Regular Chapter Reading Below Chapter Ninety-One Genevieve remained quiet as Matteo navigated the car through the city streets. His usual reckless driving had vanished, replaced by cautious precision. He stopped promptly at red lights, signaled every turn, and even gave a brief nod to a passing police cruiser. Yet beneath this controlled exterior, the anger simmered just beneath the surface. She could tell by the way his knuckles whitened around the steering wheel and how he squeezed his eyes shut at every stoplight.
She longed to explain the true reason she had sought out Michele, but she knew Matteo's mind was too clouded with frustration to truly listen. Unexpectedly, Matteo took a turn that led them away from their apartment. After a few minutes, the glaring lights of a hospital came into view, causing Genevieve to blink several times until her eyes adjusted to the brightness. Matteo pulled into the underground parking garage beneath the building and stepped out of the vehicle. Without hesitation, she opened her own door and followed him silently.
Clinging to the jacket still draped over her shoulders, they made their way up the stairwell to the third floor. Matteo was a few steps ahead, his pace steady as they entered a long corridor bathed in harsh fluorescent light. Genevieve glanced around, puzzled. She wasn't sure why they were here-this floor was designated for non-emergency cases, hardly a place for someone like Beatrice. Matteo approached the nurses' station, and the women gathered there suddenly stopped their casual chatter, their attention snapping to him.
Some looked flushed enough to model the effects of a severe sunburn, while another bit her lip nervously and let her glasses slip down her nose, attempting to appear shy. "I'm here to see..." Matteo began. "Dr. Richards," the demure nurse interjected quickly. Though Genevieve couldn't see Matteo's expression, she was certain it held nothing but disdain as the nurse's playful act faltered and she swallowed hard. "Right this way, Mr. Accardi." The nurse circled the counter and started down the hall.

Genevieve followed silently, and as she passed Matteo, she felt his fingers brush lightly down her arm. She halted, closing her eyes to hold back the tears threatening to spill. In that brief moment, she realized just how much she craved even a single gentle touch from him. His fingers intertwined with hers and tugged gently. Her legs, which had momentarily frozen, began to move again as she allowed him to guide her down the hallway. Behind them, she caught the faint whispers of envy mixed with spiteful insinuations from the remaining nurses. But she paid them no mind.
She knew this kind of jealousy was a price she'd have to pay for being a woman with a man as striking as Matteo Accardi. And if the roles were reversed, she admitted silently, she might feel a twinge of that bitterness herself. "You can wait in here while I get Dr. Richards for you," the nurse instructed, gesturing toward an empty room. "There's a gown in the top drawer of the dresser over there for you to change into." Matteo gave a curt nod and released Genevieve's hand to approach the dresser.
She closed the door behind her and nervously fiddled with her fingers as Matteo pulled the gown from the drawer. He examined the thin fabric carefully before returning to her side. Genevieve slipped off his jacket and exchanged it for the hospital gown. Reaching behind herself to zip it up, she felt her cheeks flush as the zipper seemed just out of reach. While pulling it over her shoulder had been easy enough, undoing it from behind was far trickier. Matteo tossed his jacket onto the armchair beside the bed and gently turned her around by the waist.
"I should have killed him," he muttered under his breath as the zipper slid down, exposing her bare back. "I managed earlier on my own," she replied softly. "That's good-for both of you," Matteo grumbled. She waited for his hand to leave her back, but the silence between them stretched on. One of his hands stayed firmly on her waist while the other traced the smooth skin of her lower back. "Matteo..." she whispered. "You can let go now," he said quietly. With a small shrug, Genevieve let the gown slip to the floor around her feet.
She heard his breath hitch sharply, causing a shiver to ripple through her body. It had been nearly three days since she'd felt his hands on her bare skin. His finger hooked around the strap of her thong and slid downward just as a knock sounded at the door. Genevieve squeaked softly, and Matteo's fist clenched, the fabric of the thong straining under his grip. "Don't fucking come in," Matteo warned sharply. "Alright, just let me know when you're ready," a male voice called from the other side.
Quickly, Genevieve shoved her arms into the sleeves of the gown while Matteo fastened the laces at the back. She turned to face him, and he nodded toward the bed. He offered his hand to help her climb up and then bent down to slip off her heels. His fingers glided over the soles of her feet, easing the soreness until her eyes rolled back in relief. "You can come in now," Matteo said firmly. Gathering her discarded dress and heels, he took a few steps back and settled into the armchair.
Moments later, a middle-aged man with glasses and a neatly trimmed salt-and-pepper beard poked his head inside. His gray eyes, shimmering silver under the fluorescent lights, lit up with a warm smile. "Hello! You must be Miss Sinclair. I'm Dr. Richards," he said as he stepped in and extended his hand. Genevieve accepted the cold handshake, returning a small, polite smile. "Genevieve," she introduced herself. "Miss Sinclair," Matteo corrected sharply. Dr. Richards glanced over at Matteo, who was seated nearby. "Hello, Mr. Accardi.
Glad to see you again, and with a bit less blood this time," he said with a nod, then moved to the sink to wash his hands. "So, as per your call, we're implanting a subdermal chip today?" Genevieve furrowed her brow and looked toward Matteo. He was already watching her carefully, gauging her response. He gave a single nod in confirmation. "Sounds good. We're prepping now. It's an outpatient procedure, so it shouldn't take too long," Dr. Richards explained, returning to the examination table. He rubbed his hands together and reached out to prod Genevieve's neck gently.
"We'll start by..." "What are you doing?" Matteo interrupted, his voice carrying an unusual tone. Dr. Richards continued to examine Genevieve's lymph nodes but glanced back at Matteo. "Just a routine check. We want to ensure everything's in order before administering a local anesthetic and..." "I want a female doctor to perform the procedure," Matteo stated firmly, his eyes fixed on how Dr. Richards' hands had moved toward Genevieve's upper chest. Dr. Richards looked between the two of them. "Mr.
Accardi, I assure you I will be completely professional, and my only goal is to ensure the safety of your..." He hesitated, eyes shifting again between Matteo and Genevieve. "Friend here." "She's my fiancée," Matteo corrected sharply, causing Genevieve to raise an eyebrow at him. "I want a woman, or I'll take her to another hospital." Dr. Richards sighed heavily. "Mr. Accardi, we are the only hospital equipped to..." "And why is that, Blake? How much money has my family donated to this hospital? Enough to have it renamed, wouldn't you say?
Genevieve's interactions with the medical team, combined with Matteo's unwavering presence, could reveal cracks in their relationship or reinforce their bond in unexpected ways. The subtle power dynamics at play and the lingering shadows from their past decisions promise to deepen the emotional complexity, leaving readers eager to uncover how they will navigate these challenges together.
