You Were My Favorite Hurt, And My Hardest Goodbye by Ava Knight 51 Summary Gen rushes out of a store to find her sister Jada angrily scolding Leo, who stands calmly against his SUV. Jada is furious, accusing Leo of allowing someone to be mistreated and referencing a past incident involving Lucy. Gen tries to intervene, but Jada reveals a complicated history with Leo, hinting at dangerous ties to the mafia and warning Gen about the risks of being involved with Matteo Accardi.
The tension escalates when Jada slaps Gen and threatens her, while Leo warns Jada to back off, threatening consequences. The confrontation intensifies as Leo forcibly removes Jada from the car and threatens her, causing Jada to pale despite her resistance. Gen steps in to calm things down and pulls Jada away from the scene. Jada continues to warn Gen about the dangers of Accardi, claiming he is part of the Italian mafia and has violently punished others, including Brian, for getting close to Gen.
Jada tries to use her influence to get them into a club quickly, boasting about her connections and the infamous reputation of Accardi. Inside the club, Gen firmly tells Jada she is tired of the warnings and drama. She defends her relationship with Matteo, insisting he has treated her with respect unlike past partners and that she is making her own choices. Jada is surprised when Gen casually calls Matteo by his first name, a level of familiarity even Leo and Louis don't have.
The sisters' argument cools as Jada steps away to make a phone call, while Leo quietly reassures Gen that Matteo's protectiveness will pass. Leo then asks Gen to talk to Matteo to get the full truth about the situation. When Gen questions Leo about the story Jada told regarding Brian's hand being cut off, Leo confirms it is true but explains it was not a random act of violence. Instead, it was a calculated message to protect Gen from further harm, especially given Accardi's troubled past and his father's position as a judge.
The chapter ends with Gen feeling overwhelmed and seeking a drink, reflecting on the dangerous world she has stepped into. Continue Regular Chapter Reading Below Chapter Fifty-One Gen burst out of the store, only to be confronted by a scene that struck her as utterly absurd: Jada was scolding Leo with fierce intensity. Leo stood with his back pressed against his sleek black SUV, arms crossed tightly over his chest, his gaze fixed downward on the diminutive woman who was shouting at him. Jada's arms flailed dramatically, and her foot stomped the pavement with unmistakable frustration.
"Jada, seriously, enough! You're acting like a toddler," Gen said, her voice filled with disbelief at her sister's outburst. But Jada paid no attention, continuing her tirade without pause. "How could you let him treat her like this? Didn't you learn anything from what happened between you and Lucy?" "Jada, calm yourself. This isn't anything like that. He-" "Wait a minute," Gen interrupted, her curiosity piqued as she gestured between the two. "You two know each other?" Leo let out a long sigh, while Jada huffed indignantly.
"Yeah, we know each other," Jada said, narrowing her eyes at the tall man looming over her. "We go way back, don't we, Leo?" "Just get in the car before someone calls the cops," Leo snapped, pushing off the SUV and striding toward the driver's side door. "It wouldn't be the first time!" Jada shot back defiantly. Gen groaned in frustration as she reluctantly pushed her sister toward the backseat of the SUV. After closing the door, she turned back to Jada. "Look, if you'd just-" Before she could finish, Jada's perfectly manicured hand struck Gen sharply across the cheek.
Gen's head jerked to the side, and she immediately pressed her palm to the burning spot. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she fought hard to keep them from falling. "You have no idea what you're getting yourself into," Jada hissed, her voice low and threatening. Gen rubbed her cheek, forcing herself to look straight ahead. Her jaw twitched as she caught Leo's furious expression in the rearview mirror. She shook her head once, silently telling him not to step in. Leo responded with a low growl before starting the engine and pulling out into traffic.
"You're so naive," Jada continued, her tone dripping with scorn. "I told you not to get involved with him. And what do you do? You go chasing after him!" She laughed bitterly. "Accardi is dangerous, Gen. For God's sake, he took Brian's hand off - just for you!" "What?" Gen blinked, glancing between Jada and Leo in disbelief. Jada nodded eagerly, her eyebrows raised in triumph as she caught the flicker of fear crossing Gen's face. "He didn't tell you that, did he? Yeah, Brian called Louis from the hospital.

Accardi found him on the street and tortured him for two days while his fiancée was in labor, Gen." Gen's eyes dropped to her lap. "Why would he do something like that?" "Men like him don't need a good reason. Probably because Brian touched you or something. They're possessive monsters." "There's more to the story than that, and you know it," Leo interjected, shooting Jada a sharp, disapproving look. "You knew?" Gen asked, surprised. Jada doubled over with laughter, clutching her stomach. She dabbed at her eyes as they watered. "Knew?
Leo's been Accardi's bodyguard since Accardi was, what, fourteen? Wherever Accardi was, Leo was right there." "How do you know all this, Jada?" Gen demanded, folding her arms tightly. Inda scoffed, about to answer when Leo cleared his throat and shot Jada a warning glance in the rearview mirror. "What?" Jada snapped. "Is Mr. Accardi keeping his woman in the dark? Does the NDA keep me from talking to my own sister even when she's dating the boss? Am I not allowed to discuss gang activity with the future Donna?" "NDA Donna?" Gen echoed, confused.
"You said he's taking you to Carmela's, right?" Jada pressed. "Jada, enough," Leo warned firmly. "Or what?" Jada challenged, leaning forward. "Go ahead, touch me and see what Louis has to say about it." "Louis isn't my boss, Jada," Leo growled. "You have no clue what's really going on between Miss Sinclair and Accardi. Stay out of it, or there will be consequences." "Is he going to cut off my hand too?" Jada shot back. "You wanna know how I know all this, Genevieve? Because two years ago-" Suddenly, the car screeched to a halt. Leo flung open his door and yanked Jada's open as well.
He grabbed her arm and hauled her out of the vehicle. Gen leapt out and hurried around the back to join them. Leo had pinned Jada against the SUV, whispering something fiercely in her ear. Despite her struggles, her face drained of color at his threats. Cars honked impatiently behind them, held up by the commotion. "Stop! Both of you, stop! I can handle this myself, Leo," Gen shouted, tugging at his arm until he finally stepped back. Gen pushed him gently but firmly until he relented and gave them space.
She turned her glare on her still-fuming sister, grabbing Jada's upper arm and pulling her toward the sidewalk. The pulsing bass of music spilled out from the club beside them, the night alive with energy. "You're so foolish," Jada muttered, shaking her head. "They're all the same. He's going to destroy you. He's part of the Italian mafia, Gen!" "Shhh," Gen hissed, glancing around at the crowd waiting to get into the club. Jada rolled her eyes. "See?
You don't know a damn thing about this world." Ignoring the line, Jada yanked her arm free and strode up to the guard stationed at the club entrance. He raised his hand to stop them. "Sorry, ladies, back of the line like everyone else." "Do you know who I am?" Jada demanded, resting a hand on her hip. The guard glanced between them uncertainly. "I-" "I'm Jada Carmichael. Ever heard of me? Louis Carmichael's wife. And this girl," Jada said, pointing her thumb over her shoulder at Gen, "she's sleeping with the infamous mob boss, Accardi. Know that name? Know how he operates?
Tell us to get to the back of the line again, and I'll make one phone call." The guard's eyes widened in surprise as he quickly moved the velvet rope aside. Jada turned back to Gen, folding her arms as the crowd waiting in line quieted, all eyes fixed on them. "You know what?" Gen finally snapped, tired of the drama. She grabbed Jada's arm and pushed her past the rope barrier. They stopped just inside the club's entrance, where the music throbbed softly through the walls. "I'm done listening to you tell me what I can and can't do.
Matteo has treated me with nothing but respect since the moment I met him. He's never forced anything on me-not even in the way I work for him. I'm the one pushing boundaries here. I'm the one who sought him out first. I'm the one who chose to go after him. He's never left me broken, bloody, and nearly dead in a hospital bed for two weeks like the last guy you dated before Louis. Did I say anything when you jumped into bed with a guy you barely knew before your bones had even healed?" Jada opened her mouth to argue, but Gen cut her off. "I'm five years older than you.
I've had my heart broken twice as many times, and I've learned twice as much. I have a good head on my shoulders, and it's not like we're getting married. We're just going on a date. If I decide to throw myself into Matteo's arms or kick him to the curb, that's my choice. Do you understand?" "You call him by his first name?" Jada asked, her anger fading, eyes wide with surprise. Gen released her arm. "Yeah. That's what he told me to call him. What's the big deal?" "Gen... Louis doesn't even call him by his first name.
I don't think he even knows it, and he's known Accardi since they were kids," Jada replied. Gen scoffed and glanced over Jada's shoulder at Leo. "You call him by his first name, right?" she asked. Leo shook his head in response. "I have to call Louis," Jada muttered, stepping into the club and pulling out her phone. Gen sighed, wiping her palms on her dress. Her purse appeared beside her, and she gratefully took it from Leo with a soft smile. "He'll get over it," Leo assured her quietly.
"Probably not, but it'll be fine," Gen said, staring into the club's dim interior, thinking a tequila shot would be just what she needed right now. "He's being protective, but may I ask a favor?" Leo said hesitantly. Gen sighed again. "What is it?" "Talk to him about it. He'll tell you the truth." "Are you sure about that? What about you? Will you tell me the truth, or did you sign an NDA too?" Leo shrugged. "Some things I can tell you, some things I can't." "Okay," she said, folding her arms and looking him straight in the eye. "What she said about Brian's hand...
is it true?" Leo exhaled deeply, lowering his head briefly before meeting her gaze again. "Yes." Gen felt the color drain from her face. "He cut his hand off? For touching me?" "No," Leo replied. "What do you mean?" "He brought Brian in because he touched you, but we did our due diligence. You weren't the only woman he's hurt, Miss Sinclair. But because of his father-" "His father's a judge," realization dawned on her, and she pressed a hand to her forehead. "He's hurt a lot of people before. So we helped make him less able to do so...
while sending him a message to stay away from you." Gen looked back toward the club and spotted Jada sitting on a bar stool, arms crossed and simmering. "I need a drink," she muttered under her breath. Conclusion The chapter concludes with Gen standing at a crossroads, caught between the fierce warnings from her sister Jada and the protective, yet secretive, presence of Leo. The tension between family loyalty and the dangerous world she is stepping into weighs heavily on her, highlighting the complexity of her emotions and the precarious balance she must maintain.

Amidst the chaos, the theme of protection-both physical and emotional-resonates deeply, revealing the sacrifices and hard truths that come with loving someone entwined in a perilous life. Gen's acknowledgment of the danger she faces, coupled with her insistence on autonomy, paints a poignant picture of a woman navigating love, loyalty, and survival.
