You Were My Favorite Hurt, And My Hardest Goodbye by Ava Knight 118 Summary Matteo receives a joyful photo from Gen showing her family and friends celebrating together, which brings him a bittersweet feeling as he anticipates his imminent departure. As he waits with his allies-Leo, Louis, Frankie, Alessio, and Raphael-at the Palladino mansion, a place once used for illicit dealings and now for secretive meetings, they prepare for a crucial discussion with Conor, who appears worn and troubled after recent hardships, including the loss of his father.
The meeting quickly turns serious as Alessio reveals that Accardi is in deep trouble and needs help. Matteo outlines two main threats: Guerra, an undercover FBI agent targeting their operations, and Galante, a rival aiming to take over Matteo's gambling business. Matteo explains that Guerra is the immediate concern, with their Irish affiliate O'Brien ready to confront him, while Galante plans a clean takeover once Guerra is dealt with. Matteo intends to make Gen the new Donna to solidify their leadership, confident in her strength and intelligence, with support from his trusted men.
Conor reacts with skepticism and tension when Matteo reveals his plan to go undercover to expose Conor's father, Ricardo, a powerful crime syndicate leader who is desperate and losing loyalty among his men. Matteo insists that apologizing would only put his family at risk, so he must uncover Ricardo's secrets to eliminate him. Conor vehemently opposes involving his father, warning Matteo to stay away, but Matteo stands firm, declaring his commitment to protecting his wife and child at all costs.
The confrontation escalates as both sides display readiness for violence if necessary, emphasizing their loyalty and determination. Raphael clarifies that Ricardo is imprisoned, prompting Matteo to explain that after Gen becomes his wife and Donna, he plans to surrender to Guerra deliberately, setting the stage for his undercover mission. The chapter closes with the tension between family loyalty and ruthless strategy hanging heavily in the air.

It was a lively group picture taken inside the bustling dress shop. On one side stood the Palladino family, their faces bright with joy, hands thrown up in celebration. Opposite them, Gen's close friends, Jada and Lucy, mirrored the excitement, their smiles equally radiant. But at the heart of the image was Gen herself, clutching her father's hand tightly, her grin so wide it nearly made her eyes squint against the camera's flash.
Matteo felt a burning ache in his chest as he read through the long message she had sent, where she expressed her gratitude for bringing her family together. He hoped this moment of happiness would ease the sting of his impending departure. Suddenly, a scrap of paper fluttered and landed right on his face. Matteo glanced up to see Frankie grinning mischievously, waving at him in a flirtatious manner. Matteo responded with a quick, playful middle finger before leaning back in his chair and sliding his phone into his pocket. They were all just waiting for Conor to arrive.
The meeting was set beneath the imposing Palladino mansion, a place that had long served as a dark fortress for the family's more clandestine affairs. Once a hub for trafficking drugs and women, it had since transformed into a grim venue for interrogations, imprisonments, and secretive gatherings like this one. Matteo sat flanked by Leo on his right and Louis on his left, while Frankie occupied the seat across from him. Nearby, Alessio and Raphael whispered quietly, though Frankie made little effort to hide his eavesdropping.
The heavy doors to the conference room creaked ominously as they swung open. Alessio's men straightened, tense and alert-until it became clear it was only Conor stepping inside. He looked cleaner than before, having showered, shaved, and neatly combed his hair. Yet the way his clothes hung loosely on his frame betrayed the weight he had lost, and the deep shadows under his eyes spoke volumes about the darkness of his recent struggles. "Glad you could make it," Alessio growled, his usual sharp tone dripping with sarcasm. Conor nodded curtly at Leo, Frankie, and Louis.

"Hey," he greeted, deliberately ignoring Alessio. Frankie clapped him on the back as he took the seat beside him. "Been a while since we saw you at the club," he teased. "You should bring that firecracker back around. She could give the boss's woman a run for her money. Might actually last past the first round." Matteo shot Frankie a warning look. "Frank." "What?" Frankie shrugged, unfazed. "Mira's gone," Conor said quietly, pulling a flask from his hoodie pocket and taking a long swig. "Oh shit, man. What happened?" Louis asked, concern flashing across his face.
"My dad," Conor replied simply. Frankie's jaw clenched tight, his neck muscles taut as he glanced at Matteo with wide eyes that silently acknowledged he'd stepped into dangerous territory. "Anyway," Alessio interrupted, rapping his knuckles sharply on the table. "We're all here because Accardi has gotten himself into some serious shit and needs help cleaning it off." Conor rolled his eyes while Louis chuckled softly. "Quite the metaphor," Louis commented dryly. "He's really into metaphors these days," Conor added with a smirk, taking another drink from his flask.
"This is serious," Alessio hissed, his tone cutting through the room. "Then speak plainly," Conor shot back, rolling his eyes again. Matteo sighed, rubbing his temples before speaking. "I have two problems to handle. First, a man named Guerra-he's an undercover cop." He motioned for Leo, who slid a few folders across the table for everyone to examine. "His real name is Noah Bennett. He took down seven families in Los Angeles before setting his sights on New York. He's FBI, connected to the Russo family, and a massive pain in my ass.
Before we left New York, our Irish affiliate, O'Brien, got intel from someone inside that Guerra plans to make a move any day now." Matteo slammed a manila envelope on the table, the one O'Brien had sent. "Cazzo," Raphael muttered as he flipped through the photographs inside. "Secondly, there's Galante," Matteo continued, eyeing his cousin carefully before going on. "He wants my business. Many players want in on drugs and strip clubs, but he's aiming to shift into gambling. He thinks diversifying will keep him afloat. I heard from a planted source that he's running out of money fast.
He's tried a few attacks but isn't dumb enough to go after my partners or damage the tracks or casinos-he wants a clean takeover." "What's the plan?" Conor asked, his eyes scanning the documents with the practiced focus of someone trained for situations like this. "Galante will strike after Guerra does. I have O'Brien and his men ready to confront him when that happens. My men, along with O'Brien's, won't back down easily-especially once I make Gen my Donna. If I fall, the Accardis fall. But with Gen at the helm..." Matteo's voice trailed, filled with cautious hope.
"Is she ready for that?" Alessio questioned. "She is," Leo answered for Matteo. "She's shown incredible strength under pressure. She might not fully understand the business yet, but she's smart-unbelievably smart. Dedicated, loyal, and most importantly, she listens to those who know more than her. Louis, Frankie, and I will stay behind to support her. Once we get the all-clear, we'll return to the States and take over operations immediately." "So, you're giving in?" Conor asked skeptically. Matteo shook his head firmly. "No, cousin. Guerra will be the easier target.
We just need to expose his ties to the Russo family. That'll make the FBI question his loyalty. O'Brien's man is already spreading rumors and stirring an investigation. Gen will help dig up dirt through her computer work and contacts. The one I'm most worried about is your father. He won't back down or be easy to expose. He runs one of the largest crime syndicates in New York. Broke or not, he has a loyal following." Conor scoffed. "He wants an apology," Matteo said calmly. Conor's eyes lifted slowly. "He couldn't be that much of a coward," Conor murmured. "He's desperate.
Running out of money. Most of his men will stay loyal, but those he can't pay will start looking elsewhere. We've already had five defectors reach out to the Accardi family. He needs to act fast before he loses too many. I have to eliminate him," Matteo said, hoping his cousin would understand. "I could apologize, but let's be honest-he wants one for a reason. Chances are high he'd walk away with me dead and my family in his hands. So... I'm taking a page from Guerra's book. I'm going undercover. I need someone who knows your father better than you do.
I need to uncover his weaknesses, his mistakes. Every piece of dirt he's hidden, every skeleton in his closet, every woman he's ever been with." Conor laughed through his nose. "You know he doesn't keep a damn diary like Palladino," he said, jabbing a thumb toward Alessio. Matteo smirked. "It's not a diary I'm after." It only took Conor about fifteen seconds to catch on. "No. Leave him out of this." "It can't be avoided." "Do you have any idea what Michele has put him through? What he's lost?" "Don't you know what he's gained?" Alessio interjected.
Conor slammed his fist down on the table as he stood up. "I'm saying no! Leave Ricardo out of this." "This is my family we're talking about," Matteo said firmly, his decision unshakable. Conor shook his head. "It's my family too. Leave Mira's dad alone, Matteo. I'm warning you." Matteo placed his palms on the table and rose to his full height, glaring across the wooden surface at his cousin. "Do not threaten me, cousin," he growled. "I was running my family six years before I was your age. I've lost everyone. Every time I get a blessing from God, the world tries to take it away.
I will protect my wife and my child with every breath I have. If you think I'll let you stand in my way just because we share blood, you're sorely mistaken. Are we clear?" Leo, Louis, and Frankie all withdrew their weapons from where they had them concealed and placed them deliberately on the table within easy reach. The message was unmistakable: they were ready to die in a shootout here if their Don demanded it. They would sacrifice themselves to protect Genevieve.
"Accardi," Raphael said, raising a finger to interrupt, drawing Matteo's attention away from Conor to Alessio's second-in-command. "This man you're talking about-he's in prison, right?" Matteo exhaled deeply and sank back into his chair. "Yes, that's correct." "So when you say you want to go 'undercover'..." Raphael began to piece it together. Matteo glanced at Conor, who shook his head in warning. "The day after Gen becomes my wife and Donna, I'll head back to the States. I'll let Guerra have me.
I'll let him take me in." Conclusion The weight of family, loyalty, and sacrifice hung heavily in the room, underscoring the high stakes Matteo and his allies faced. Despite the looming threats and the dangerous path ahead, there was a flicker of hope in Matteo's unwavering resolve to protect Genevieve and their future. His willingness to go undercover, to confront enemies both external and internal, showed a man driven by love and duty, prepared to endure any hardship for the sake of those he cherished most.
