You Were My Favorite Hurt, And My Hardest Goodbye by Ava Knight 108 Summary Gen wakes abruptly during a car ride with Matteo to a place called the box, the site of their first nights together. When Matteo tries to pull her out of the car, she fiercely resists, kicking him and locking herself inside. Despite Matteo's anger and attempts to get her out, Gen stands her ground, determined not to be forced into anything. Eventually, Matteo offers a reluctant compromise: she can come but not enter the interrogation room with him.
At the rundown restaurant they arrive at, Matteo insists Gen stay with the guards while he confronts Marco, a man suspected of betrayal. Gen asserts her position as the future Donna of the family and insists on being present, despite Leo's objections. Matteo assigns Stephen to keep a close watch on her to prevent her from witnessing the brutal interrogation. As Matteo and Leo enter the interrogation room, Gen's curiosity and fear grow, especially when she discovers Marco is tied up and being questioned about his betrayal.
Through a TV monitor, Gen listens as Matteo interrogates Marco about his treachery and the benefits he received, including money and luxuries. Unable to contain her rage any longer, Gen suddenly storms into the interrogation room, grabbing a heavy wrench and violently attacking Marco.

She jolted awake the moment Matteo swung the door open outside the very house where they had shared their first nights. Before she could react, his hand was already grasping hers, steadying her. Reflexively, she lifted her leg and drove a sharp kick into his chest. He grunted, stumbling back several paces to regain his balance. His eyes widened in surprise as she slid across the leather seat to the far side of the vehicle. Standing with his hands planted firmly on his hips, his gaze fixed and resolute, Matteo suddenly lunged into the car, intent on pulling her out.
When he finally managed to haul her from the car, she went completely limp, nearly causing him to drop her onto the sidewalk. She kicked and screamed, her resistance fueling his frustration as he struggled to drag her across the pavement. Stephen's warning about the noise barely registered before Matteo hissed through clenched teeth, "I don't fucking care!" His defiance only stoked her fire. One well-aimed kick-that was all it took-right between the legs. Matteo exhaled sharply and crumpled to one knee. Seizing the moment, Gen scrambled back inside the car and locked the door behind her.
She watched as he paused, still kneeling, gathering himself. Her breath rattled in her chest, her heart pounding fiercely against her ribs as she waited, tense and uncertain, to see what he would do next. Slowly, he rose and turned to glare at the window she was hiding behind. He tried the handle, found it locked. "I want to go," she shouted through the glass. "No," he mouthed back, his eyes dark and unwavering. She slumped back into the seat, crossing her arms defiantly. She didn't care if she looked like a stubborn child-she was standing her ground.
Matteo pushed away from the SUV, pacing the sidewalk with wild, emphatic gestures. Though she couldn't see his lips or catch his words, she knew from the furious energy that he was cursing enough to make a sailor blush. Suddenly, he banged hard on the window, making her jump. "You can come, but you're not going into the room with me," he offered, a reluctant compromise. Gen smiled slyly and unlocked the door. Matteo yanked it open, and she darted to the opposite side, wary of any sudden moves.
Instead, he sat down heavily beside her, anger etched across his face, and barked at Stephen to get in and drive. The journey to the box lasted about twenty minutes. Throughout the ride, Gen's mind spun with questions and fears. She had a rough idea of the brutal methods Matteo used to extract information-she'd endured some of those tortures herself. Could she bear to watch the man she loved rip someone apart for betraying him? Her thoughts drifted to Becca. Gen could never harm her friend like that. But if this man had hurt Becca?
If he was the one who planted the listening device and the keystroke logger? She needed to find out. And, in a dark corner of her heart, she wanted to see him suffer for it. "We're here," Matteo announced, opening his door with a sharp impatience. "What's going to happen?" Gen asked as they approached an old, rundown restaurant. Newspapers covered the grimy windows, and dust coated the rusted iron gates that barred entry. A faded health code notice taped to the front confirmed the place had been shuttered for decades.

"I'm going to talk to Marco," Matteo said, lifting the gates to open the door. "Right, but-" "Weakness," Matteo cut her off sharply. "Don't push me. You'll stay with the guards in the main room while I go into the walk-in." The walk-in? Gen swallowed her questions and followed silently through the abandoned restaurant. In the lobby, five men sat scattered at tables, eating takeout. They nodded as Matteo and Gen passed, their eyes lingering curiously on the woman walking beside their Don.
Matteo pressed on to the back of the restaurant, entering a large kitchen where another five men waited, including Leo. Leo rose abruptly from his chair, his eyes darting between Matteo and Gen with a look she recognized instantly-the same one her father gave her when she'd been caught sneaking out. "What the fuck, Accardi? Why the fuck is she here-" "Don't start," Matteo warned. "She can't be here." Gen cut in firmly, "Actually, she can.
I'm the future Donna of this family, and if I want to be present while you all get information from a man who might have hurt my friend, then I will be." Planting herself squarely in front of Leo, Gen glared up at him. She knew she could take down Matteo easily-he held back to avoid hurting her. Leo, however? She suspected he wouldn't hesitate to leave a few bruises if it meant keeping her from witnessing their savage side. "She's staying here," Matteo assured Leo. He walked to a small box TV in the corner, where a few guards watched a man tied to a chair.
He pressed the power button, eliciting groans. "Stephen, you'll sit here and make sure your Donna doesn't move." Matteo stepped back in front of her. "Don't let her watch. Don't let her press her ear to the door. Keep your eyes on her every second." Gen crossed her arms and shot him a hard look. He pointed to a chair in the corner. Narrowing her eyes even more, she stalked over and sat down with a huff, crossing her legs and bouncing her foot impatiently. Matteo reached out, gently lifting her chin to meet his gaze. He pressed a soft kiss to her lips before stepping back and nodding to Leo.
The two men entered the room together, and she heard Marco's mocking "hello" before the door slammed shut. Gen sprang from her chair and rushed across the room, startling the men nearby. Before Stephen could stop her, she powered off the TV. "Let go of me, Stephen," she warned. "Sorry, Donna, the boss said-" "What did the boss say?" Frankie asked from the doorway. Stephen released her, and they both turned to look at him. "Frankie, where the hell have you been?" Gen demanded. He shrugged. "Had to take care of a few things. Why's Marco tied up?" He nodded toward the screen.
Gen glanced back just as Leo reached up to knock the camera out, plunging the screen into static. She sighed heavily. "Matteo thinks he planted the surveillance in Marco's office and did some other things. I don't know all the details. That's why I wanted to listen." "Interesting," Frankie said, stepping beside her. He shooed Stephen and the other guards away from the TV, then turned up the volume, bracing himself against the table.
"I hope you enjoyed the benefits of what Guerra had to offer," Matteo said casually, the clinking sound of metal on metal faint in the background, as if he were moving things on a table. "Immensely," Marco admitted. "What exactly did he give you? What was worth betraying your entire family for?" "You aren't my family. If you were, I'd call you by your first name, Matt..." Marco's grunt of pain echoed through the speakers. "Even if you don't consider us family, is five million a year not enough?
The free penthouse, the Audi Q5, the travel, the girls-none of that?" "Not compared to what he had to offer." "You know you won't leave this room alive, Marco," Matteo said with a heavy sigh. "Why don't you do us one last favor and tell us everything you did? I'll make it quick. You've seen what we do in here-hell, you've done some of the worst damage yourself. You and the rest of those fuckers are going to die anyway." "Please, Accardi, I saw your woman before you closed the door." His voice dropped low. "I know you won't drag this out either way. You wouldn't want her to think less of you.
Then again, I've seen the guys she usually goes for. Maybe if you give me a few hits, she'll get jealous and let you color her skin a bit." A sharp crack echoed, and Marco screamed, masking the pain. His breathing grew ragged and uneven. "I'll tell you what. I'll tell you about the last thing I did for Guerra, huh?" Marco sneered. "How I took that cute little shy roommate of hers. Let me tell you something, Accardi, those Boston girls have fight. Not enough, though." He laughed darkly. "She stopped fighting after the third time I fucked her raw. Just laid there and took it.
Boring as hell, even after I took her in the ass-she wouldn't so much as scream." Gen's insides twisted painfully. Her vision blurred, and she realized she hadn't breathed in far too long. Her fists clenched tightly against the table as Frankie watched her cautiously. Marco laughed cruelly. "All these people fear you, Accardi, but you're missing out on a high by never having a woman beneath you shaking in fear, pissing all over your dick because she knows you're about to use her up and slit her throat." A hot tear slipped down Gen's cold cheek.
Her skin felt numb, but her heart shattered inside her chest, pain radiating through every limb. "Why isn't he doing anything?" she whispered as Marco detailed how he had kidnapped Becca from their home, taken her to a warehouse on the outskirts of Boston, tied her to a pillar and... "He's testing to see if he'll slip and give useful information," Frankie explained gently, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Useful information?" Gen hissed, fury rising inside her. Suddenly, rage consumed her.
One moment she stood frozen before the TV; the next, her vision tunneled, and her legs moved without her control. Frankie called her name, hands reached out to grab her, but nothing stopped her. She yanked open the door to the walk-in cooler. Matteo turned, face paling as he saw the fierce determination etched on hers. Leo's mouth fell open, and Marco's eyes widened as she stormed into the room, focus razor-sharp. Without hesitation, she grabbed an object from the table-one end heavy enough to throw her off balance, but she didn't care.
Raising it with both hands, she pulled it back and screamed, swinging it forward with every ounce of strength fueled by her anger. The monkey wrench struck the side of Marco's face with a sickening crack. Teeth flew from his mouth as his head snapped sideways. Blood splattered across the floor and onto Leo's shoes. It wasn't enough. She swung again, hitting his knee, bending his leg at an unnatural angle. His agonized cries echoed off the walls, driving her onward. She didn't slow, raising the wrench above her shoulder and bringing it down again and again with relentless fury.
After several brutal blows, Marco's cries ceased. He stopped flinching, stopped bracing-he simply went still. The wrench was ripped from her grasp, and she spun toward the one who took it. Matteo bore the brunt of her fists until he managed to pin her wrists and trap her against the wall. His body pressed into hers as she screamed-angry, frustrated, broken. But it wasn't enough. The pain burning inside her chest, reducing her heart to ash and swelling her lungs until she couldn't breathe, demanded release.
Tears streamed down her face, blurring her vision as she struggled against Matteo's hold, desperate to return to the broken man in the chair and unleash more of her fury. She fought until she had nothing left to give.
