Matteo suddenly sprang upright, pressing her back onto the bed just as a handgun appeared in his hand out of nowhere. A sharp crack echoed through the cabin. Gen shrieked, instinctively covering her ears. Silence fell heavily in the small space.
Her breath came in quick, shallow bursts as she cautiously turned her head toward Matteo. He sat up, the sheets tangled around his waist, his hair messy from sleep. Squinting, he tried to focus on the shadowy figure standing in the doorway. His chest rose and fell rapidly, his gun unwaveringly trained on the intruder. Gen shifted her gaze to the doorway and found Alessio Palladino standing there, an unimpressed expression on his face. His eyes flicked casually to the bullet hole in the wall, just inches from where his head had been moments before.
"La tua mira è sbagliata, Cugino," he said dryly. "That was a warning shot, Stronzo," Matteo growled, loosening his grip on Gen's arm. Alessio's eyes swept over the two of them, tangled naked beneath the sheets. "Benvenuti in Italia. Alzarsi." "Cazzo. One minute. Go away," Gen hissed, drawing startled looks from both men before she burrowed back under the covers. A few seconds passed before Matteo gently peeled the sheets away from her face. His sleepy, boyish smile made a warm blush rise slowly on her cheeks. "Amore, did I just hear you curse in Italian?" he teased softly.
"Maybe," she murmured. "And how long have you been hiding this secret knowledge of my second language from me?" "A few months. I've been learning." "Just the curse words?" "A few," she admitted with a shy smile. Leaning down, Matteo kissed her with that same smile still playing on his lips. "Buongiorno, Debolezza." "Good morning... uh..." "Weakness," he whispered before pressing another kiss to her lips. "Ah, well, Buongiorno, Matteo. Looks like we broke a few laws after all. How did you sleep?" she asked as he settled back into bed, pulling her close against his chest.
He sighed contentedly, his breath rising and falling against her skin. "Twenty more hours like that and I'd be a new man," he confessed, eyes closed, a soft smile lingering. "Twenty hours? I can make that happen," she said, determined. "I'm sure you can. But we'll have to get up soon. Alessio's the kind to leave us behind if we take too long." "Let him," she whispered, nuzzling her cheek against the embroidered family coat of arms on his chest. *** "I would-if our bed at his place wasn't twice as big and three times as comfortable," Gen hummed approvingly.
"With a balcony that overlooks the valley and the ocean far in the distance." She hummed louder as Matteo's breath tickled her ear. "A full staff at our beck and call, a five-star chef, and a pool with a waterfall feature." Gen pushed herself up on her elbows, raising an eyebrow. "Hot tub?" He smiled. "A big one." "Andiamo," she said, throwing the sheets off with a grin as Matteo chuckled behind her. How had she ended up here? Gen wondered, gazing out the window at the rolling Italian countryside slipping by. Her fiancé, a man with dangerous ties and an intensity in his eyes, sat beside her.

When he caught her staring, her stomach fluttered nervously, anticipation rising for his next touch. He took her hand, which he'd been holding gently in his, raised it to his lips, and kissed the back of it before settling his arm around her shoulders. Matteo answered Alessio's questions in rapid Italian, using words far too complex for Gen to follow. She shook her head, returning her attention to the landscape-the soft murmur of Italian filling her ears, Matteo's thumb stroking her flat stomach, her heart swelling with happiness. The estate appeared suddenly.
One moment she was watching the gentle hills, the next they were pulling up to towering wrought iron gates. She leaned forward, noticing six burly guards with heavy firearms standing at attention. Two men walked alongside the car, mirrors hanging low as they inspected the underside for any hidden devices. She didn't want to imagine what kind. The car passed through the gates and rolled slowly down a long gravel driveway. It wasn't just one massive mansion. Several homes dotted the surrounding hills.
She spotted a tennis court, horse stables, rows upon rows of grapevines, and a sprawling orchard before they circled to the front of the main house where their party awaited. Gen stared up at the grand estate, mouth slightly agape, until Matteo opened the door and took her hand to help her out. "Right?!" Jada squealed, held back by Louis to stop her from rushing at Gen like she had at the airport. "These are a few of my staff," Alessio said, his voice flat, barely masking boredom. "They'll show you to your rooms.
We're preparing lunch on the veranda," he added, gesturing toward the back of the house. "Settle in, and when you're ready, we'll meet there. Then..." Alessio shot Matteo a pointed look, as if he really wanted to speak with him privately rather than play host. "Come along, Weakness," Matteo whispered, his voice low and warm. "We don't need help finding our way." "Lead the way," she replied with a smile, looping her arm through his as he guided her up the grand staircase.
As they walked through the ornate halls, Gen's eyes drank in every detail-from the ancient wallpaper patterned with tiny intricate designs no bigger than her thumb, to the painted ceilings adorned with cherubic angels and towering prophets. She ran her fingers along the heavy velvet curtains framing the tall windows and gawked at fossils displayed in glass cases. Matteo watched her closely, savoring every subtle expression, smiling at each gasp, tightening his grip whenever she threatened to wander off toward something new.
They reached a towering door, at least ten feet tall, and Gen eagerly waited for Matteo to push it open. She stepped inside, releasing his arm as she took in their bedroom. A massive four-poster bed dominated the room. Thick, plush rugs covered the cold stone floors. An ancient wooden wardrobe, its door open, revealed several expensive suits and stunning gowns. A huge fireplace, large enough to fit them both comfortably, crackled with a warm fire. Images of them wrapped in blankets by the hearth, sharing stolen kisses and chocolate, flooded her mind.
She noticed a door leading to a bathroom but wasn't interested-her curiosity was drawn to the French doors just ahead. Ignoring Matteo as he began removing his jacket and undoing his cufflinks, Gen pushed the doors open fully. A soft breeze swept through, carrying the scent of salt and earth, brushing her hair and skin. Goosebumps prickled every inch of her body as she rested her palms on the cool stone railing. Their room faced the back of the house, and from her vantage point, she couldn't see any other balconies. The space was large enough to hold a sofa, a table, and two stools.
She gazed out at the ocean sparkling in the distance, as if the water itself was reflecting sunlight in a silent invitation to come home. Moments later, Matteo's warmth pressed against her back, his hands settling on the railing beside hers. He nuzzled his nose against her shoulder and sighed deeply with contentment. "Do we have to go back?" she whispered, as if speaking louder might shatter the dreamlike moment. Matteo chuckled softly. "The sun rises just over there, and the sunset... breathtaking," he murmured against her skin.
"I don't think I have any breath left for it to take," she replied in a breathy whisper, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. He leaned her back against the railing and kissed her. "What's the plan, Matteo? Why did we come here so suddenly?" she asked. They hadn't had a chance to talk on the plane. She knew there was a reason for his urgent departure from the country. Though he'd arranged everything for both their work and hers, she wasn't one to go along without understanding why.
"Well," he began, brushing hair from her face as the breeze picked up, "there are a few reasons. I needed to meet with Alessio to discuss some things. I wanted to take you away so we could celebrate our wonderful news away from the city. And... there are customs to consider." "Customs?" she raised an eyebrow. Matteo nodded. "It's tradition that we marry in Italy. If that works for you." Glancing around at the stunning scenery, Gen smiled back at him, surprised he even needed to ask. "I suppose I could get excited about marrying you here.
I guess we should start planning soon-many venues and caterers book years in advance." Matteo tilted his head thoughtfully. "That's true," he agreed, his smile widening as he pulled her closer. "If I was willing to wait that long to call you my wife." She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "When were you thinking? Six months?" He pursed his lips, his golden eyes searching hers. "Two days," he whispered. Gen's mouth fell open, breath stolen away completely.
"I want to marry you in two days, Weakness." Conclusion This chapter beautifully captures the tender intimacy and burgeoning excitement between Gen and Matteo, weaving their deepening connection against the lush backdrop of Italy. The blend of vulnerability and playfulness in their interactions reveals the strength of their bond, even amidst the undercurrents of danger and uncertainty that surround them.
Their shared moments of warmth and whispered promises offer a poignant contrast to the tension hinted at by Alessio's sudden arrival, underscoring the fragile balance they navigate between love and peril. As they step into the grandeur of Matteo's world, the chapter highlights themes of trust, tradition, and the courage to embrace a future together despite the shadows that linger. Gen's surprise at the swift proposal speaks to the transformative power of their relationship, where every glance and touch carries the weight of unspoken hopes and fears.

The presence of guards and the weight of family traditions suggest that danger and duty are never far away, even in moments of happiness.
