You Were My Favorite Hurt, And My Hardest Goodbye by Ava Knight 38 Summary Matteo finally releases Genevieve, who feels the heavy weight of his words lingering. She watches as Matteo approaches Brien, extending a hand in alliance, while Brien's gaze frequently flickers back to her. The arrival of the rest of their group shifts her attention, and she notices the mixed reactions from the men-curiosity, annoyance, and amusement. Genevieve quickly retreats to the bathroom, where she checks her disheveled appearance and steels herself for the challenges ahead, emerging with renewed confidence.
Outside the bathroom, Leo warns Genevieve that she is playing with fire and advises caution during the upcoming meeting. Genevieve admits she was merely distracting Matteo because he is too personal and close to her, but she ignores Leo's warning and moves toward the dining room. There, she sees Matteo seated with a fiery-haired woman, and the tension rises as she realizes only one seat remains-next to O'Brien. Despite Matteo's unreadable expression, Genevieve takes the seat farthest from O'Brien, who immediately flirts with her, much to Matteo's annoyance.
The negotiation begins with O'Brien proposing a price for the track acquisition, which Genevieve quickly challenges as too low based on her own calculations. Matteo counters with a higher offer, and the two men engage in a tense back-and-forth over the price and terms, with Matteo asserting dominance through subtle physical warnings to Genevieve. The atmosphere is charged, and O'Brien's confidence wavers when Matteo references a shared rival, Declan.
Ultimately, Matteo and O'Brien reach a deal for eight million dollars plus rights to a new track, with Matteo demanding strict protections and warning of severe consequences if crossed. Throughout the meeting, Genevieve navigates the complex dynamics between Matteo and O'Brien, sensing the underlying tensions and power plays. Matteo's protective grip and possessive declarations over her highlight the personal stakes intertwined with the business negotiations. As the deal is sealed, the room holds its breath, the gravity of the agreement and the simmering conflicts hanging palpably in the air.

She watched silently as he strode over to Brien, extending his hand in a gesture of alliance. O'Brien returned the smile, engaging in conversation with Matteo, but all the while, his eyes kept flickering back to her. The sudden ding of the elevator doors caught her attention again, pulling her gaze away. She turned just in time to see the other four men from their group stepping out of the second elevator.
Leo and Alexander exchanged curious glances with her, Marcos rolled his eyes in obvious annoyance, and Frankie-the guy with the easy laugh-burst into a loud, genuine chuckle. Genevieve frowned deeply and made a beeline for the bathrooms, Leo's shadow trailing closely behind her. Once inside the bathroom, Genevieve rushed to the mirror and let out an exasperated groan. Matteo had been right all along. Her lipstick was smudged, strands of hair had escaped her carefully pinned-updo, and her blouse and skirt were creased from the tension of the moment.
Her eyes shone with an intensity that suggested she'd just glimpsed something divine-something almost like heaven-yet again. She pressed her palms flat against the cold marble countertop and lowered her head, taking a moment to steady herself. Then, she glanced back at her reflection and gave a firm nod. This was only the beginning. The real challenge was still ahead. She splashed cool water on her face, smoothing down her hair and fixing the remnants of her makeup with quiet determination. When she finally stepped out of the bathroom, there was a newfound confidence in her stride.
Leaning casually against the wall just outside the door was Leo. She gave him a brief nod and headed toward the dining room. "You're playing with fire," Leo whispered softly behind her. Genevieve's eyes narrowed slightly. "I know exactly what I'm dealing with, Leo," she hissed under her breath. "I was just keeping him distracted. He's... too personal. Too close." She trailed off, unwilling to reveal more. "Afraid of heights," Leo finished for her. "He'll be distracted the entire meeting, too. Just don't do anything reckless. This meeting matters." Genevieve let out a frustrated groan.
That was precisely why she'd done it in the first place! Ignoring his warning, she pressed forward. She caught sight of Matteo watching her from his seat opposite O'Brien. His arm was casually draped over the back of the chair beside him-the same chair now occupied by a stunning redhead with fiery hair. Genevieve stopped dead in her tracks. The table was set for ten. Between Matteo and his entourage, O'Brien, the redhead, and two of O'Brien's associates, only one seat remained empty: the one next to O'Brien himself.

Narrowing her eyes, she met Matteo's gaze, but his expression remained unreadable, like a slab of cold slate. Finally forcing her feet to move, she approached the table. O'Brien pushed his chair back and pulled hers out with a practiced ease. "Thank you," Genevieve whispered as she slid into the seat farthest from O'Brien. "No need to thank me," he replied quickly. His thick Irish accent was unexpectedly intoxicating.
She wasn't sure what she'd imagined him to look like, but his youthful skin, piercing green eyes, and perfectly styled blond hair made him striking-made all the more attractive by the wide, cheek-splitting smile he directed at her. "And what's your name, love? My dear Accardi didn't mention he'd be bringing an angel along," O'Brien purred, leaning in slightly, invading her personal space. "Miss Sinclair," Matteo interrupted sharply. "My name's Gen," Genevieve said firmly, meeting Matteo's glare without flinching. "I'm the new accountant," she added to clarify.
"There's no way a woman as beautiful as you could be stuck doing something as dull as accounting," O'Brien mused, resting his elbow on the table and propping his head on his palm. "I have a certificate to prove it," she smiled back, a line she loved to use when flirting. The last time she'd said it was to someone very different... "Where the hell is the waiter?" Matteo barked suddenly, flagging down a passing man who was already overloaded with trays of dishes. "Don't mind him," O'Brien whispered with a chuckle.
"He's just worried I'll steal you away the same way he stole my PR rep." Genevieve raised an eyebrow. "Oh, and did Miss Kenorde tell you that?" she asked Matteo pointedly. She felt O'Brien's breath tickle the back of her neck and instinctively pulled away. "She was good at making elevator rides much less taxing, too," he added with a sly grin. "Every negotiation tactic you plan to use diminishes with every word you speak to her, O'Brien," Matteo warned coldly.
Genevieve glanced over to see Matteo flipping a knife between his fingers, his other arm still resting on the back of the redhead's chair. Instead of letting jealousy gnaw at her, she smiled warmly at the shy-looking woman and extended her hand. "Genevieve," she introduced herself. The woman returned the smile. "Maisy." "What's your role here?" Gen asked. Maisy rolled her eyes. "Pawn. You?" Gen looked between the two men. "Apparently the same. Want to switch seats?" "Finally, someone with manners," Maisy said with a smirk. Both women pushed their chairs back.
Matteo's arm fell limply to his side as he plunged his knife into the table in frustration. The two women exchanged a knowing nod as they passed each other. Genevieve shot Matteo a glare as she yanked the chair back and sat down. His hand slid up her back, gently caressing the soft fabric before coming to rest on the bare skin at the nape of her neck. He squeezed once in warning, then took a sip of his whisky. O'Brien chuckled. "Seems like the women will be running the show sooner than we thought, huh, Accardi?" "Soon?" Matteo asked, a slight smirk tugging at his lips.
O'Brien laughed heartily. "I see your point," he said, glancing over at Maisy with appraisal. "I suppose all that's left is to discuss the acquisition of the track. How does five million sound?" Genevieve couldn't help but snort before she could stop herself. Every head turned toward her, except Matteo's, who continued to watch O'Brien with unreadable indecision. "Sorry for interrupting," she said, "but are you insane? I ran the numbers myself. Diego makes six times that in revenue every year. Anyone who sells it for less would be a fool.
If you want the track, you should know that better than anyone. What benefit is there in signing such a deal?" O'Brien regarded her with a mixture of curiosity and respect before turning back to Matteo. "She's not part of this," Matteo explained. "I beg your pardon, but I've been working on this deal for-" Matteo's hand tightened on the nape of her neck, silently telling her to stop. "Ten million," Matteo countered sharply. Genevieve's jaw dropped. "Six," O'Brien replied. Matteo sighed deeply.
"Eight, and you can have it within the month-plus rights to my new track in Austin." O'Brien's eyebrows shot up toward his hairline. He leaned back in his chair, swirling his drink thoughtfully, then shook his head. "Declan's got you nervous, huh?" The pressure on her neck tightened, forcing her head down. Almost immediately, Matteo loosened his grip and lightly massaged the skin before finally releasing her completely. He leaned forward, fingers interlaced on the table. "Declan doesn't scare me. He pisses me off beyond words.
Almost as much as I'm sure you were pissed when he took over fifteen percent of your turf last year." O'Brien's smile vanished for the first time since she'd sat down. Maisy shifted uneasily in her chair. Matteo had clearly hit a nerve. "Eight million and exclusive rights to the Austin track. And I want an invitation to the opening," O'Brien said, holding out his hand. "We have a deal," Matteo said, grabbing O'Brien's hand firmly. When O'Brien tried to pull away, Matteo tugged him closer across the table.
"Along with the understanding that if anyone lays a finger on what's mine, any deals will be null and void, and I'll come at you with the fury of not one but three severely pissed-off Italians, armed to the teeth." Genevieve glanced back and forth between the two men, confusion swirling in her mind as she tried to piece together their conversation. O'Brien's eyes slid over to her, dropping and rising slowly as he took her in. Matteo's hand tightened once more, making O'Brien's lecherous smile twitch at the corners. He sighed heavily. His gaze lingered on her. "Fine.
We have a deal." "Make sure the others know. She's mine." O'Brien nodded, and Matteo finally released his grip. The room seemed to hold its breath as the tension settled, the stakes of the negotiation hanging thick in the air. Conclusion The chapter closes on a note of intense emotional complexity, where Genevieve navigates the delicate balance of power, desire, and strategy. Her resilience and quiet determination shine through the tension, revealing a woman who is not only aware of the dangers around her but also willing to face them head-on.
