Chapter 1 Chapter 1 At a rundown dock in San Diego, bomb disposal expert Nadia Hayes stared down her worst nightmare. Her five year-old son Levi and her husband's adopted sister Vivian had just been freed from kidnappers. But three timed bombs were strapped to their bodies. Fifteen minutes to detonation. She lunged for her son's device. Her husband, Commander Kael Ashford, blocked her path. His eyes were ice. "Save Vivian first," he commanded. Nadia stared at him in disbelief, her voice trembling. "Kael, that's your own son over there!" Kael's gaze remained cold and unwavering.

"Nadia, save Vivi first, or you'll regret it." He raised a hand. A signal. Two men dragged Nadia's mother, Lorelei, off a nearby boat. One held a camera. The other pinned Lorelei to the ground and ripped at her clothes. Lorelei's screams tore through the night, each one a knife in Nadia's chest. Nadia turned back to Kael, her eyes burning. "Levi's our own flesh and blood! Why are you doing this to me?!" Kael's expression never wavered, his voice cold. "Your mother was a respected music teacher in the military community.

One video of this, and her reputation will be destroyed forever." His words were vicious, each one cutting deeper. "Kael, please let my mother go! I promise I'll find a way to save both Levi and Vivi, okay?" Nadia fell to her knees with a thud. The once-celebrated bomb disposal expert was reduced to nothing but a broken, pleading mess. Kael looked down at her, his resolve unshaken. "I will never risk Vivi's life!" Nadia's fists clenched until her nails drew blood. 12:28 My Last Gift To My Ex: A Bomb 0.0% Chapter 1 "So you'll risk our son's? And my mother's?

What am I to you?" Kael ignored her hoarse cries. He raised his hand sharply. In the next instant, the final strip of fabric was torn off, exposing Lorelei's trembling body to the eyes of everyone present. Nadia lost it and tried to lunge forward, but Lorelei's weak, desperate cry stopped her. "Nadia... don't worry about me... Save Levi first!" Lorelei's body shook, but she managed a strained, heartbreaking smile for Nadia. Tm okay... Just save him." The words pierced Nadia deeper than any shrapnel. She had no choice left. "Fine," she whispered, her voice cracking.

"I'll save Vivian first." Only then did a flicker of satisfaction cross Kael's face. He gestured for the men to release Lorelei, then hauled Nadia roughly to her feet. "Good girl, Nadia. Now hurry." Gritting her teeth. Nadia stepped toward Vivian. The bombs were rigged with a foreign timing system. Any wrong move could trigger an immediate detonation. Swallowing her panic and a deep, searing hatred, Nadia worked with methodical precision. It still took five minutes to disable the device on Vivian By the time she finished, the timer on Levi's bomb had ticked into its final five minutes.

With her level of expertise, Nadia could still make it. Just as she moved toward Levi-just two steps away-the timer on his bomb suddenly began counting down at an impossible speed. A terrible dread clenched her gut. A warped ticking sound crackled from the timer. Before Nadia could react, Levi threw his tiny body forward and shoved her hard away from him. Then came the deafening boom. Nadia watched in horror as Levi was torn apart by the explosion, his small body reduced to a bloody pulp. "Mommy, it hurts!" Levi's broken voice faded into silence as his body went limp right before her eyes.

Nadia stared at him, unblinking, until a mouthful of blood burst from her lips. Her vision blurred, her consciousness slipping away. As the paramedics wheeled her into the emergency room, a familiar voice drifted into her ears through the haze. "Mr. Ashford, I don't understand. You've always loved Vivian. So why did you marry your wife in the first place?" Kael glanced at Nadia on the gurney, his expression unreadable. Tve made countless enemies in San Diego. I couldn't let them find out that Vivi is my weakness.

Marrying someone I didn't care about was my My Last Gift To My Ex: A Bomb 12-28 1.3% Chapter 1 way of protecting her from harm." The secretary looked with sympathy at Nadia's battered form. "But isn't that unfair to Mrs. Ashford? And Levi is your own flesh and blood." Kael turned his back, indifferent, without sparing Nadia on the bed another look. "Nadia will always be my wife, and we will have more kids. But my heart belongs to Vivi alone." A single, silent tear traced from the corner of Nadia's eye. Now she knew the woman Kael truly loved was, and had always been, his adopted sister.

How utterly, bitterly ironic. Nadia and Levi existed only as tools in Kael's twisted love for the woman he truly adored! Nadia awoke to the acrid stench of antiseptic. Her heart was a void of despair. She sat up, walked to the nurse's station, and dialed the number that had remained buried for five years. "I accept your terms," she said, her voice devoid of all warmth. "But I have two conditions. First, find out why my son's bomb timer accelerated. Second, make sure Kael pays for what he did!" There was a long pause on the other end, followed by a low, calm reply. "Consider it done.

I'll be in San Diego myself to pick you up in one month." With that, Nadia hung up and called her lawyer. "Draft the divorce petition immediately."
