Chapter 6 Margaret's POV My phone kept vibrating, relentless, insistent, almost frantic, again and again. I lost count of how many times it buzzed before a flight attendant leaned over and gently reminded me to switch to airplane mode. Flustered, I moved to hang up the incoming call. But my trembling fingers slipped, and I accidentally answered. George's apologetic voice filled my ear instantly. "Margaret, things here may take a little longer. You can grab something to eat first. Once we finish, we'll head straight home." I almost laughed.
The news of his Mating Ceremony was already spreading across the entire pack continent. He had practically summoned every powerful figure to witness his bond with Isla. Yet he still had the nerve to play the role of the devoted mate in my ear. George... how many lies did you plan to use to mend the first one you told? A heavy ache pressed against my throat. After a long silence, I forced out a single word. "Okay." The airport broadcast repeated safety instructions overhead. George must have caught the faint sound through the phone, a jagged edge of suspicion cut through his calm facade.
"Margaret... are you not at home? It sounds like someone's talking nearby." "I'm home," I replied calmly. "The TV's on." He seemed relieved. And maybe because I sounded so agreeable today, his voice softened even more. "Margaret, as long as you stop overthinking, nothing will change. I promised you-they won't take that away. Once Finley's school enrollment is settled, we'll reinstate our mate bond." "Everything will go back to the way it was." I didn't answer. What was there to say? Should I ask him what I truly was in his eyes? Or ask whether Isla was really carrying his second child?

Chapter 6 4.32% Even George himself probably no longer knew the difference, whether he was lying to me, or lying to himself. A flirtatious female voice spoke on his end, calling his name. He hurriedly wrapped up the call. "Margaret, I'll talk to you later-" The line went dead. That was, most likely, the last sentence we would ever say to each other in this lifetime. For a moment, I went still. Then clarity hit. Without hesitation, I powered off the phone, removed the SIM card, and consigned the last tether to my old life to a trash bin.
Through the tiny airplane window, the sprawling lights of the city shrank into scattered sparks. Farewell, George. Farewell, Bluebell Pack, the place I once called my second home. There was nothing left for me to miss. At the same time, far away in Bluebell Pack, George lowered his phone, momentarily dazed. But Isla tugged him toward the circle of elders, pulling him back into the celebration.
With so many important pack members congratulating them, he felt it would be rude and almost cruel to explain that he and Isla had only applied for the Mate Bond Deal to secure Finley's placement in the pack school. The real Luna of Bluebell Pack, he thought, was still Margaret, the woman who had stood beside him for eight years. At first, he had made her Luna out of necessity. But after all these years, he'd gotten used to her. He had intended to keep her in the shadows of his life forever. Thinking of Margaret, a few images flashed across his mind. She had been strangely calm today.
No accusations, no tears, no panic, nothing like the way she reacted when she first learned the truth. Her compliance felt like a trap, a silence so absolute it rang with the force of an explosion. And the more reasonable she was, the more uneasy he felt. Isla noticed George drifting off. Understanding instantly, she discreetly signaled Finley. Finley ran over, clinging to George's arm, refusing to let go. He begged George to play games with him, then pestered him to pick out toys from an online marketplace. The elders of Bluebell Pack watched with warm, approving smiles.
"Finley, from now on you'll have a real daddy and mommy," Imogen cooed, hugging her grandson as if she could smother him in affection. "And real grandparents too. Aren't you happy?" Finley's dimples appeared as he grinned sweetly. "Grandma, I'm so happy. I want my daddy, mommy, grandpa, and grandma to stay with me forever. I don't ever want us to be apart." Tears welled in Imogen's eyes. She nodded fiercely. "Of course, sweetheart. No one will ever separate us. No one will ruin our happiness." As she said this, she cast a pointed, meaningful glance at George.
