Chapter 90 Dec 18, 2025 POV: Lysander The conference room feels like a war bunker by the time Thalia finishes presenting her research. Maps covering every surface, documents spread across the table, laptop screens glowing with genealogical trees that read like horror novels. I'm leaning against the window watching Seattle's skyline while my brother processes what his mate just told us. The Montgomery family isn't just corporate rivals or random hunter assholes.

They're founding-family ancient, the kind of bloodline that traces back to medieval fucking Europe when killing wolves was noble work. "So we're fighting nobility." My voice comes out flatter than I intend. "Fantastic. Always wanted to punch an aristocrat." Thalia shoots me a look that says this isn't funny except it kind of is. We're werewolves in the twenty-first century dealing with families who think it's still the Dark Ages and we're demons that need purging. "Robert Montgomery's line goes back nine hundred years." She pulls up another document.

"They were minor nobility in what's now Germany. Lost their titles during political upheaval but kept their purpose-hunting wolves was their identity before it was their profession." Kieran's jaw works like he's chewing glass. "And the Colorado territory?" "The hunters have considered it their hunting ground since the 1800s. Multiple hunter families settled there specifically because of the wolf population." Thalia's fingers fly across her keyboard.

"When Fenris Legal expanded into Colorado Springs twenty years ago, when Magnus bought Montgomery & Associates-" "We invaded their territory." I finish, pushing off the window. "Violated some ancient treaty neither side bothered honoring anymore because we all pretended to be civilized." The weight of inherited conflict settles over the room like fog. This isn't a fight we started-it's one passed down through so many generations nobody remembers the original grievance. Just ancestral hatred coded into DNA, teaching children to kill before they can read. My phone buzzes against the table.

Caroline's name lights up the screen. Kieran notices my hesitation. "Take it. We need every angle." I step into the hallway, thumb hovering over accept. She called twice today already-once about her father's weird behavior, once about finding something in her family records that made her sick. "Are you sitting down?" Her voice sounds wrong, brittle. "Should I be?" "My father's family tree. I was going through old records after our conversation about the corporate attacks and-" A pause, then my phone buzzes with an incoming photo.

"Lysander, look at what I found." The image loads and my stomach drops through the floor. The Montgomery family crest. Ornate, medieval, probably commissioned by some ancestor who thought wolves were demons incarnate. A wolf's head, mouth frozen mid-snarl, pierced by three arrows forming a triangle through skull and jaw. The exact same symbol spray-painted across Fenris Legal Group's Seattle building in twenty-foot letters. "Caroline-" "I know." Her voice cracks completely. "My family did this. My blood did this.

The vandalism, the attacks, everything-it's my people." I'm gripping the phone hard enough to crack the case. Through the conference room glass I can see Thalia and Kieran still analyzing documents, oblivious to the bomb Caroline just dropped. "You're not responsible for your bloodline." The words taste inadequate even as I say them. "Aren't I?" She sounds like she's crying now. "I chose to stay part of this family, to work in the business, to keep the Montgomery name. I knew what they were-what we are-and I stayed anyway." My chest tightens hearing her anguish bleed through the phone.

Caroline who's sunshine and designer heels and genuine kindness, who makes law school look easy while making everyone around her feel capable. Caroline who chose me knowing exactly what I am, who defended that choice to her father despite the consequences. "You chose to warn me." My voice comes out rougher than intended. "That's what matters. You called the second you suspected something. You're digging through family records to help us even though it's destroying you." "But they're my family." The words break on a sob.

"My father, my cousins, people I've known my whole life-they're trying to kill you. To kill people you love." I close my eyes, press my forehead against cool glass. "I know." "How do you not hate me?" The question hits like a physical blow. I think about her laugh, the way she lights up talking about contract law, how she listens when I talk about cases like my opinion actually matters. How she makes me feel seen instead of just tolerated as the chaotic younger brother. "Because you're not them." The certainty in my voice surprises me. "You're Caroline.

You're the woman who cried over a Legally Blonde musical because Elle Woods deserved better. Who feeds stray cats behind her apartment. Who sends me terrible jokes at 2 AM when I can't sleep." Her breathing evens slightly. "Those jokes are hilarious." "They're objectively terrible." A smile cracks through despite everything. "But I love them anyway." The silence that follows feels heavy with things neither of us can say yet. We've been dating six months-not long enough for I love you , definitely not long enough to navigate blood feuds and family betrayals.

"I'm sending you everything I have." Her voice steadies, shifting into lawyer mode. "Financial records, property holdings, family communications. Whatever helps." "Caroline, you don't have to-" "Yes, I do." Steel underneath the bubbly exterior now. "My family started this. I'm helping end it." She disconnects before I can argue. I'm staring at the Montgomery crest on my phone when Thalia appears in the hallway. One look at my face and she knows something shifted. "What happened?" I show her the photo. "Caroline found this in her family records. The Montgomery crest." Thalia's face goes pale.

"The same symbol from the building." "Yeah." I pocket the phone. "Her father's family. Ancient hunter nobility who've been killing wolves since the Middle Ages." "And she's dating you." Thalia's voice holds something like sympathy. "That can't be easy." "She's destroying herself trying to help us despite it being her bloodline doing the damage." My hands clench. "How the fuck do we resolve this? Centuries of blood feuds don't just disappear because people fall in love across enemy lines." "They don't." Kieran's appeared in the conference room doorway.

"But sometimes love gives you a reason to try." We're heading back inside to analyze Caroline's information when my phone explodes with alerts. Pack security, emergency protocols, multiple locations breached simultaneously. Kieran's phone goes off two seconds later. Then Thalia's. "Three pack houses under attack." Kieran's already moving, grabbing keys, shifting into Alpha command. "Davis Street, Riverside, and the northern safe house." We're running for the elevator when more messages flood through.

The pack was ready this time-extra security Magnus insisted on after the corporate attacks, guards positioned strategically, defensive measures that actually worked. They fought them off. No casualties, multiple injuries, hunters retreating after five minutes of coordinated assault. But the message is crystal fucking clear. The hunters know where we live. Know our patterns, our schedules, our defensive capabilities. Know which houses hold families with children, which hold warriors, which hold our most vulnerable members. Someone's feeding them information from inside the pack.

We have a traitor. Archer
