Chapter 120 Dec 24, 2025 POV: Thalia They have the triplets. My world narrows to that single fact, everything else-the burning guest house, the bleeding pack members, Caroline unconscious on the ground-compressing into background noise. Orion, Luna, Phoenix. My babies. Nine years old and surrounded by armed hunters who've already proven they'll murder children without hesitation. My brain cycles through possibilities with the kind of detached efficiency that comes from eight years of survival thinking. Someone betrayed us.

Gave away the kids' location, their routine, the exact timing when they'd be most vulnerable. The pack house was supposed to be secure. Protected. Only ranking members knew we'd moved vulnerable families there after the attacks. Only ranking members and- "Mom and Dad." The words taste like ash. "They're the only ones outside pack hierarchy who knew where we were keeping the kids safe." Lia's smile confirms everything before she speaks. "Your parents are predictable.

Offer them immunity from pack justice, a chance to walk away clean from the daughter who humiliated them, and they'll sell out anyone." She pauses for effect. "Even their own grandchildren." The betrayal should hurt. Should crack something open inside me. Instead I just feel cold, empty, the kind of numbness that comes from having your worst assumptions about family proven correct. Of course they sold out the triplets. Of course they chose self-preservation over their grandchildren's lives. That's what the Turner family does-destroys its own to survive.

One of Lia's hunters steps forward, rifle slung over tactical gear, radio crackling with static. "We're prepared to negotiate." "How magnanimous." Kieran's voice could freeze fire. "You've taken hostages and committed multiple counts of attempted murder. What exactly are you negotiating?" "Terms of surrender." The hunter's tone stays professional, detached, probably military background judging by his posture. "Lysander Fenris surrenders himself, comes with us as hostage. In exchange, we release the pregnant human and the three children.

Everyone else lives." "And if he refuses?" I already know the answer but need to hear it spoken. "We start executing hostages." Lia takes over, clearly enjoying this. "One every ten minutes, starting with the youngest." Phoenix. They'd start with Phoenix. My baby who draws wolves and has uncontrollable strength and just turned seven last month. The bond pulls at me, sensing my panic, trying to offer comfort that doesn't exist.

Kieran's standing ten feet away but I feel him through the connection-his rage, his terror, his desperate need to fix this that's warring with the knowledge that some things can't be fixed. "Five minutes to decide." The hunter checks his watch with deliberate precision. "Then the clock starts." They back off, giving us space to deliberate while keeping weapons trained on every pack member. Caroline's being helped to her feet by Robert, blood streaming down her face, conscious but barely. The merc who hit her keeps his rifle pointed at her stomach, threat unmistakable.

Kieran and I move apart from the pack instinctively, seeking privacy for a conversation that shouldn't be happening. We're Luna and former Alpha, leaders who are supposed to have answers, and instead we're drowning in impossible mathematics. "We can't give them Lysander." My voice stays level despite my hands shaking. "He's the Alpha. The pack needs him to survive whatever comes next." "We can't let them kill our children." Kieran's jaw clenches hard enough I hear teeth grinding. "There has to be another way-" "There isn't." The words taste like giving up.

"We're outgunned, outmaneuvered, completely at their mercy. The only leverage we have is Lysander's surrender, and using it means abandoning him to god knows what." "They'll torture him for information. Use him as leverage for more demands. Maybe kill him anyway once he's served his purpose." "I know." My throat closes around the admission. "But if we don't give them what they want, they murder our children. And Caroline's baby. And probably Caroline herself once she's no longer useful." The impossible calculus of leadership.

Three children versus one pregnant woman versus the Alpha we need to survive. How do you weigh lives? How do you assign value to people you love when the choice is who dies first? Kieran's hands frame my face with devastating gentleness, pulling me close enough I can feel his breath ghost across my lips. The bond wraps around us tight, desperate, trying to offer comfort neither of us can accept. "Whatever happens," he says quietly, voice stripped of everything except raw honesty, "we do it together. We survive together or we die together.

But I'm not losing you again." "You're not losing anyone." I press my forehead to his, grounding myself in his presence, his certainty, the solid reality of him still standing despite everything trying to tear us apart. "We're getting everyone back. All of them. I don't care what it costs." "Thalia-" "I mean it." My hands fist in his shirt, blood and ash and all. "I didn't survive eight years alone raising three children to lose them now.

I didn't build a life from wreckage to watch it burn because my psychotic sister can't handle rejection." His lips brush mine, soft and desperate and everything we can't say with pack members watching and time running out. "I love you. Bond or not, choice or biology, I love you." "I know." My voice breaks on the words. "I love you too. Which is why we're fixing this." "Two minutes." The hunter's voice carries across the clearing, professional and detached, probably counting down executions in his head.

We pull apart, trying to think tactically through parental terror that's making my brain feel like static. There has to be an angle, some leverage, something we're missing that turns this from massacre to survival. Before either of us can speak, movement cuts through the clearing. Lysander steps forward. Hands raised, walking toward the hunters with the kind of calm that comes from decisions already made. "I'll go." His voice carries to every wolf, every human, every person watching this nightmare unfold.

"Let Caroline and the kids go, I'll surrender." "Lysander, no-" Kieran starts moving, the bond probably screaming at him about abandoning his brother. "It's my call." Lysander doesn't look back, keeps walking toward the armed hunters who are already moving to secure him. "My pack. My responsibility as Alpha." He's ten feet from Lia when he stops, turns to look at Caroline. She's barely standing, supported by her father, blood crusting her face and terror written across her features. "I love you." The words hit like physical blows.

"Take care of our child." "Don't do this-" Caroline's voice breaks completely, the bubbly exterior shattering into raw grief. "Please, we can find another way, we can-" "Already done." He faces the hunters again, hands steady despite what this choice costs. "I'm Alpha Lysander Fenris. You wanted me, you've got me. Now let them go." Lia's smile is absolutely triumphant, the kind of satisfaction that comes from watching enemies destroy themselves from within. "Strip him. Secure him. Anyone tries to interfere, kill the hostages immediately." Hunters move with practiced efficiency.

Zip-ties around Lysander's wrists, stripping him of anything that could be weaponized, forcing him to his knees in the mud while they secure him properly. He doesn't fight. Doesn't resist. Just submits with the kind of dignity that makes my chest crack open because this is what leadership looks like-sacrificing yourself so others survive. This was always what Lia wanted. Not just victory, not just revenge. Destroying us from within by forcing us to choose which family members live and which die. Making us complicit in our own destruction. The radio crackles.

"Release the hostages as agreed." Thirty seconds later, SUVs pull away from the pack house visible on the video feed. Three small figures stumbling out, running toward pack warriors who immediately move to secure them. My children. Safe. Alive. Terrified but breathing. Caroline's released, stumbling toward Robert who catches her before she falls. The merc keeping his rifle trained on them as insurance against sudden attacks. And Lysander kneels in the mud, hands bound, surrounded by hunters who've already proven they'll kill without mercy. Lia moves closer to him, crouching to meet his eyes.

"Did you really think this would end any other way? That I'd let you all walk away clean after what you took from me?" She stands, gestures to her people. "Move out. We have what we came for." They drag Lysander to his feet, force him toward waiting vehicles. He catches my eyes once as they load him in-expression unreadable, but the message clear. Survive. Take care of them. Don't let this be for nothing. Then he's gone. Driven away into darkness by hunters who've already demonstrated they torture before they kill.

And we're left standing in the wreckage of impossible choices, wondering how the fuck we're supposed to fix this. Archer
