---- Chapter 8 Gideon didn't chase after Lily. He simply muttered, "She's so old and still acting all dramatic." The homeless people didn't pay us any attention. They were too busy playing cards, smoking, and drinking. Empty bottles littered the floor. Gideon walked over and started making small talk with them. "How's everyone settling in?" 'There was no response. It was as if he wasn't even there. 'These weren't homeless people. They were a bunch of old men acting like they owned the place. Gideon, having gathered this group of troublemakers, had some serious guts.
But being ignored made him awkward, so he pushed me to the front. "I know money's tight for everyone, and I've been thinking about it, so I've got some good news for you all today." Of course, the word "money" got their attention, and they turned toward Gideon almost in unison. Their eyes lit up. "Are you giving us money?" one of them asked. Gideon loved the attention. These homeless people knew exactly how to feed his ego. "Mr. Huber, you're such a good man," another said smoothly. " Everyone knows how kind-hearted you are.

Anyway, how much are we getting?" Gideon stretched out the suspense, deliberately slowing his speech for effect. ---- 'The homeless people stared at him without even blinking. Seeing him taking his time, I decided to step in. "Don't worry. Even if Mr. Huber has to sell a kidney, he'll make sure you all have enough money to spend." Gideon shrugged and looked at me. "I'm a little tight on cash now, so I cut him off, "So you should work harder to make money for them!" I knew he was trying to use my money, but I wasn't about to play the fool for him.
"We agreed to use your-" Linterrupted him again, saying, "Alright, I now you're tight on cash, so I've come up with a great way for you to make money fast!"" When the homeless people heard the word "fast", they all stood up. I smiled. "There's a blood donation campaign going on, and the community center is offering rewards." Silence fell at once. I could even hear a mouse scurry across the room. They froze when they heard it was a blood donation. For them, the best way to get money was to lie back and do nothing. Donating blood was the last thing on their minds.
"You're not asking me to donate blood, are you?" Gideon asked. T answered bluntly, "Wow, you catch on fast." Gideon's face twisted with panic. He pointed at me and shouted, " You bitch! You want me to donate blood? Why don't you go do it yourself?" Irubbed my belly, acting shy. "I was going to surprise you, but since ---- you asked, I'll tell you. You're going to be a dad." Pregnant women couldn't donate blood. Gideon's already pale face twisted even further. "Is it mine?" I punched him hard on the arm. "Of course." The thought of carrying his child again made me shiver.
After what happened in my previous life, I would never let that happen again But the homeless people didn't care who was donating blood. All they cared about was the money. A few homeless men, who were bigger than Gideon, stepped forward to ask, "When do we get the money?" A month of barely scraping by had left Gideon gaunt and skeletal. His hair was matted and unkempt. Strictly speaking, he looked more homeless than they did. Gideon stood to the side in a total daze, his mind seemingly blank. With a bright smile, 1 announced that I had already signed him up.
'Their eyes practically sparkled "T've got some things to do tomorrow, so when Gideon goes to donate blood, all of you will have to take care of him." 'They eagerly rubbed their hands together, watching the silent Gideon. "Don't worry! We'll stick with Mr. Huber tomorrow and make sure he's alright!" smiling, I grabbed my bag and left.
