---- Chapter 10 When the police called, Gideon froze. It wasn't until he identified the body that he confirmed it was Lily. She'd died along with her baby. T went with him. The moment he saw her, he collapsed in front of her body, crying out in grief. "I failed you, Mom!" he wailed. "I couldn't even see you one last time!" People around us murmured sympathetically, handing him tissues and offering words of comfort. It was easy to act like a dutiful son after the fact. Honestly, Gideon was one hell of an actor. A day after Lily was buried, he came looking for me.
He hurried over in his wheelchair and grabbed my arm, "Kenzie, quick! Come with me!" 1 kicked the wheelchair away, sending him sliding about ten feet away. "What now?" He grabbed the wheelchair, trying to steady himself. "I found my mom's killer! It was a thief. He accidentally hurt her during a robbery. I frowned. "Oh, so did the cops arrest him?" Gideon shook his head. "He must have been desperate for money if he was stealing, If only my mom hadn't fought back.

She was still always so vicious." For amoment, I couldn't help but wonder if Lily would crawl out of her grave to haunt him if she heard that. ---- suddenly, I felt a pang of pity for her wasted life. I said calmly, "The thief was taking the money for your leg surgery." Gideon's gaze flickered. I thought for a split second he might feel guilty. But he didn't. Instead, he convinced himself that it was all Lily's fault for being too protective of her money. Gideon grew more agitated. "Kenzie, come on.
We need to turn ourselves in, You should help the thief take the blame." Imade sure I hadn't misheard him. I figured I must have been too kind to him, so I slapped him hard with all my strength. "You really have no shame!" I yelled. "If I get the chance, I'll have you sent to a psych ward to fix that warped brain of yours!" Gideon clutched his cheek, looking hurt. "He didn't mean to do it! He was just forced by the situation! And besides, you're pregnant now. They won't sentence you too harshly." T couldn't take it anymore, so I pushed him and his wheelchair out of the way.
Then, I poured a bucket of water over his head. "Gideon, I'm warning you. If you're still in my sight in ten seconds, you'll lose your other leg too." He was gone in the blink of an eye. Minutes later, I got a text from him, "Think it over. This is a chance to do something good." 1 knew Gideon wasn't the brightest, but I never thought he'd be this dumb. Not long after, I called the cops. The thief was arrested. ---- Just as I'd suspected, Gideon had been hiding him at his place. He got arrested as well, charged with harboring a criminal.
But he refused to admit it, insisting the thief had hidden himself in his house. The thief never spoke up about it either. No one would believe anyone would hide the person who killed their own mother, so Gideon was released. But as soon as he stepped out of the station, a group of homeless men grabbed him. They forced him to keep donating blood so they could cash in on the reward "More blood? I can't anymore. Wait until my wife's had the baby." After just a few days, Gideon was barely recognizable. He looked gaunt and drained. But the one thing that never changed was his rotten nature.
"We can't wait! You better get the money now." T pushed Gideon's wheelchair forward. It's your chance to do something goo "Don't try to back out of this. Gideon glared at me, upset that I wasn't speaking up for him. "Look who I brought," I said. A young man jumped out from behind me.
