Chapter 5 "Wait-don't call the police!" The first one to crack wasn't Garrett. It was Melissa. She let out a choked cry, face draining of color. "Jane, please-you can't! My brother's got priors. If he goes back in, that's it for him!" So that explained the boldness. He was a repeat offender. I looked at her, felt nothing. "Whether that's it for him or not? Not my problem. He trashed my house. Actions have consequences." On the video call, the realtor was already on with dispatch. I could hear sirens closing in. Then I saw them-two patrol cars pulling up.
Officers stepped out, headed for the front door. Melissa's brother spotted them through the window. Bolted for the back. They caught him at the fence line. Cuffed him right there on the lawn. The others got rounded up too-all of them loaded into squad cars while the realtor kept filming. Patricia crumpled, muttering under her breath. "It's over... we're done..." She knew. All those years of keeping up appearances back home-gone. Every bit of bragging to relatives, every carefully crafted image-worthless now.
She dragged herself up, stumbled toward me, her whole demeanor flipping like a switch. "Janey... honey... I was wrong. I'm so sorry. We're family, aren't we? Please, don't let this go any further. Let my nephew go. Please." I looked at her. At that face that could turn on a dime. 12:38 Grandma Doesn't Know Me? Then Keep Your Hands Off My Villa! 3.0% "Family?" I said quietly. "You told my daughter you barely knew her. Remember?" I pulled my arm away from her reaching hands.
"Since we're not close, let's keep this business." On screen, the buyer stood in my wrecked living room, arms crossed, jaw set. "This place is totaled," he told the realtor. "Either you cover every cent of repairs, or I'm knocking a hundred grand off my offer." I didn't hesitate. "Tell him the price drop works. And bill the people who broke in for damages." Melissa let out a wail, dropped to her knees in front of me. "Jane, please-we can't pay that! A hundred thousand dollars-that'll destroy us! I'm begging you!" She grabbed at my legs, tears and snot running down her face.

Then she started slamming her forehead against the marble floor. Over and over. The sound echoed through the lobby. I stepped back, disgusted. My eyes moved past her to the man who'd been standing in the back this whole time, silent, hiding behind the women. My husband. Garrett Carter. "Want to settle this quietly?" I asked him. He didn't answer. "Fine." I reached into my bag, pulled out the document I'd been carrying since last night. Dropped it on the table in front of him. "Sign it." Then Keep Your Hands Off My Villa! 3.2% Chapter 5 Garrett's eyes went wide. He picked it up with shaking hands flipped through the pages. When he hit the section reading "Respondent waives all claims to marital property and agrees to zero-percent division of assets"*-his hands started trembling violently. "Jane... this is insane." He looked up at me, eyes bloodshot, voice cracking. "You're really gonna divorce me over this? Blow up our family?" "Over this?" I almost laughed. "Garrett. Your mother humiliated our daughter in front of everyone. Your family broke into my house and destroyed it.
And you think that's just this?" I watched him try to form words. Watched him fail. I reached into my bag one last time. Pulled out a stack of photos. Threw them at his feet. They scattered across the marble like shattered glass. Photos of Garrett with another woman. His arm around her waist. Kissing her outside a hotel. Dates stamped in the corner-going back two years. "Is this just this too?" Dead silence. Garrett froze. All the color drained from his face. Patricia bent down, hands shaking, picked up one of the photos. Stared at it. Then at her son. Like she didn't recognize him.
She'd thought he was just a good son helping his family. Sending money home. She had no idea he'd been keeping another woman on my dime! I wasn't done. I pulled out another document. Bank statements. Highlighted transfers. "Two years of payments to her. A hundred twenty thousand dollars. All off my credit card." I looked at him. "That's adultery, Garrett. And fraud. I've documented everything." 12:38 Grandma Doesn't Know Me? Then Keep Your Hands Off My Villa! 3.4% I let the words hang. "So tell me again how I'm being insane." No one moved. No one spoke.
Garrett stared at the photos on the floor. At the divorce papers in his hands. At me. And for the first time since I'd known him, I saw real fear in his eyes. He knew I wasn't bluffing. The evidence I had would bury him in court. He'd lose everything, walk away with nothing. Maybe even face charges. Every exit he thought he had-I'd already sealed it shut.
