Chapter 2 Chapter 2 I took Poppy home. The motion-sensor light in the entryway glowed softly as we walked in. On the wall hung our family portrait-taken on Poppy's third birthday. Archer holding her. Me leaning into his shoulder. Perfect. So perfect it made me sick. "Mama, I'm hungry." Poppy tugged at my sleeve. "Okay, baby. Mama'll make you dinner." I crouched down to change my shoes, the motion automatic, rehearsed. Through the frosted glass of the patio door, I could see the swing set in the yard. Archer had built it himself when oppy was two.
m gonna build my girl a swing that makes her feel like she s flying," he'd said. He'd worked until midnight, blistering his hands. I'd scolded him for being ridiculous while I bandaged him up. He'd just kissed my forehead and said, "Anything my girls want, I'll make it happen." We were so good back then. We met in college. He was broke. I was the daughter of Seattle's richest man. Everyone said we didn't make sense. But Archer fought his way up from nothing. He told me, "Sloane, I'm gonna prove to your dad that I'm worth you." When he proposed, he rented out the entire riverside park.
A thousand drones spelled out "Sloane, Marry Me" in the night sky. 12:39 Grandma Doesn't Know Me? Then Keep Your Hands Off My Villa! 15.8% Chapter 2 He'd only been running his company for three years at that point. That proposal cost him nearly everything he had. I cried and told him it was too much. He knelt in front of me, holding out the ring. "Compared to everything you've done for me? This is nothing." I cried and put on that ring. After we got married, I helped him run the company while managing our home. I reviewed every contract. I sat through every major client meeting.
The success his company had now? Half of it was his talent. The other half was my work. I thought that was what love looked like-campus to wedding, nothing to everything, building it all together. But now? The pasta boiled over in the pot. I stirred them mechanically "Mama, they're gonna burn." Poppy's voice snapped me back. turned off the heat and dished out two plates, setting them on the table just as I heard the lock turn. cher was home. "Smells amazing," he said, grinning. "Just made pasta." I turned back toward the kitchen to grab forks.

He followed me in and reached for the plates in my hands. "Here, I got it." The second our fingers touched, I flinched. "What's wrong?" He looked at me. "Nothing. Just hot." I forced a smile. Dinner was quiet except for the clink of forks against plates. 12:39 Grandma Doesn't Know Me? "The nurse said they were gonna do a kidney donor match for Poppy.
Said you specifically requested it." I looked up at him, my smile sweet. "I was like, who in our family needs a kidney? So I went to the nurse's station to ask, and guess what I found?" His throat bobbed. I continued. "A form. Patient name: Felicity Hayes. Guardian signature: you." I kept smiling. "So I figured maybe it was some relative's kid, and I went to check on her. Met this woman named Ivy. Said she's your distant cousin?" Archer's face went stiff. "How do you know about them?" His voice came out dry.
"I was just worried about you," I said, spooning some sauce onto his pasta: "Your cousin's kid is sick-that's a big deal. Why didn't you tell me? I could've helped pull strings at the hospital." His shoulders visibly relaxed. Relief washed over his face. "I just didn't want to stress you out," he said, looking down at his pasta. "You've got enough on your plate with the company and the house. I figured I'd handle it myself." Airtight explanation. If it weren't for Felicity's face, I might've actually believed him. "Oh, okay," I said lightly, letting it drop.
After dinner, Archer went to shower. The water ran loud. His phone lit up on the nightstand. [Ivy: Your wife came by today. I'm scared.] [Ivy: What if she hurts our daughter?] [Ivy: When are you coming to see Felicity? She keeps asking for her daddy.] 12:39 Grandma Doesn't Know Me? Archer came out, toweling his hair. He paused when he saw me. "You're still up?" "Waiting for you." I smiled.
He picked up his phone, glanced at it, and started typing quickly. His face gave nothing away. Before bed, he kissed my hair. That gesture used to make my heart race. Now it just made me feel sick. My phone buzzed under my pillow. I pulled it out. A file from Trey. (0) (0) 12:39 Grandma Doesn't Know Me?
