Chapter 6 My wounds were healing, but the scabs itched and ached terribly. The pain lasted for days, sometimes making it hard to sleep. During my recovery, I continued to study. Living alone this time gave me a sense of freedom had never felt before. Even though Fabio and I had lived in a quiet house with only a nanny, I had always felt like a guest there. But now, in my small rented apartment, I finally felt peace-because the place was truly mine. Getting into university these days was not easy. I knew I had to give twice the effort of an ordinary student.
Still, I had never forgotten what I learned in school and I believed I had the ability to enter the university of my dreams. Every morning, I got up early to read and every night I fell asleep with books piled beside my bed For the first time in years, I felt like my life was moving in the direction I wanted. One afternoon, I walked home humming softly, feeling lighthearted. But when I reached the door I froze. Two familiar figures stood there waiting for me. "Mom?" I said softly. The elegantly dressed woman turned around and glared at me. Her expression was filled with anger.
"Don't call me mom. I'm not your mother! You've become so independent that you didn't even tel me about your divorce. Do you even think of me as your mother anymore?" The man beside her, dressed neatly in a white shirt, gave her sleeve a small tug. "Dad," I greeted coldly, keeping my voice distant. He looked uneasy. "Oh, Sofia's been studying, hasn't she? I see so many books here," he sai with an awkward smile. "Yes," I replied briefly. I opened the door and let them in. Despite everything, I still poured tea for them. Guests were guests, after all. Mrs.

Altomare sat down on the sofa, crossing her legs elegantly and started scolding me right away. "Sofia, why didn't you tell your family about your divorce? It's such a big matter and you the decision all on your own. Do you even take us seriously anymore?" made I frowned, feeling my head start to ache. Her voice was sharp and continuous. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. "Are you done?" I interrupted coldly. She looked at me in disbelief, clearly offended. Mr. Altomare's expression hardened. "Sofia, how can you speak to your mother like that?
She's only doing this for your own good." "For me?" I gave a short laugh, one that came out colder than I intended. "That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. Don't make me laugh. Have you ever truly cared about me? You kept ties with Fabio's family only so you wouldn't lose your social connections. But you don't have to 11:32 pm worry-you still have Serena. You've been pushing her toward Fabio ever since she came back. Isn't that what you wanted? You're just trying to replace me with her, right?" Mrs. Altomare's face turned pale.
Her chest rose and fell quickly as if she was struggling to breathe. "Sofia... is that what you think of us?" "Isn't it obvious?" I said, my voice trembling slightly, but I forced myself to stay calm. "You came here just to blame me. Did you ever once ask how I was doing? Did you care about my injuries? Did you even know I almost died?" "You're injured?" Mr. Altomare asked, frowning as if hearing it for the first time. I let out a bitter laugh. What was I expecting? It didn't matter anymore. "Sometimes I really wonder," I said quietly, staring straight at them.
"Am I not your real daughter The paternity test clearly said I am, but why don't you love me? Shouldn't you feel guilty after everything I've been through? Shouldn't you try to make it up to me and treat me better thar before?" I laughed bitterly again and continued, "Instead, you treat someone not even related to you like a precious jewel. You made me live in a dark, damp attic, forced me to give up my college entrance exams so you could arrange a marriage for your own benefit. Even after I got married, you neve once called to ask how I was doing.
The only time you invited me home for dinner was because Serena came back and wanted to see Fabio." Mrs. Altomare's face went white. Her lips trembled as she tried to speak. "We... how could we not love you..." she whispered weakly. But her voice faded and I could see her lost in memories she didn't want to recall. Beside her, Mr. Altomare lowered his head, silent and ashamed, not daring to meet my eyes. Morh Lucia Lucia Morh is a passionate storyteller who brings emotions to life through her words.
