---- Chapter 9 I smiled at him and got into his car. I put my arms over his shoulders just like I used to when I was a child and asked him softly, "You heard everything, didn't you?" He choked. "Yes. "T wanted to rush in and sock that shameless bastard in the face, but... Luckily, my darling daughter has grown to be so brave and strong. You don't need me to defend you anymore, haha!" I could hear what he was implying.

He was afraid showing up would embarrass me, so he hid in the corner and watched, waiting to see if he should jump in. My tears flowed quietly. Of the three men who showed up today, one pissed me off, one needed me to teach him a lesson, and one made me cry from guilt. The next day, my father left early in the morning even though he had retired ages ago and only arrived home at lunch. ---- He greeted me with a smile, rubbed his wrist, and returned to his room.

Through a crack in the door, I heard him tell my mother that he had gotten justice for me. My heart tightened, and T served up his favorite steamed fish dish. Along time passed before I next heard about the Chandlers. After Seamus' arrest, he was sentenced to five years in jail. The doctor who caused my miscarriage had his leg broken by Seamus, and no patients ever came to him again. He closed down his clinic and dragged his limping leg away from the village, disappearing from the public eye.

As for Laura, after her face was disfigured, word spread that she seduced men everywhere and forced her sister-in -law to "suicide". Everyone in the village and even the nearby towns knew about the shameless hussy from the fishing village. At some point, she accidentally fell into the sea. Although someone called the cops and saved her life, the ---- shock of nearly drowning drove her insane. Everyone in the village felt she had it coming, so no one tried to care for her.

In the end, she stayed alone in that abandoned house until she starved to death. They only discovered her body from the stench once it started rotting, then they simply buried her in a hole somewhere. As for Thomas Chandler, perhaps my scolding that day finally drove some sense into his head. After going home, he began to study in earnest. The older members of the extended family thought he was not a bad egg like his father, so they raised him out of the kindness of their hearts.

He did not disappoint, gaining entry into one of the country's best medical schools and joining Doctors Without Borders after graduation. He sent me gifts and letters every year. Although the letters were not particularly long, I could tell they were sincere. I was glad.
