Chapter 5: The First Crack

Carter finally realized I wasn’t joking when he tried to log into his official Twitter to "clear the air" and found the password changed.

He called me thirty times. I didn't pick up.

He showed up at my downtown apartment at noon, looking haggard. The "plastic Kennedy" my grandmother described was melting under the California sun.

"Stella, open the door! Hailey is getting death threats because the fans think she’s the 'other woman.' You need to put out a press release saying she’s just staff."

I opened the door only halfway, the security chain still engaged. "She is just staff, Carter. And you are just a client I no longer represent. Call Amanda. She has a junior publicist who specializes in 'messy transitions.'"

"A junior?" Carter’s eyes flashed with the ego that had made him a star. "I’m an A-lister. I don't work with juniors. I work with you ."

"Past tense, Carter. It’s a grammar lesson you should have learned in drama school."

I shut the door. The sound of him kicking the frame echoed in the hallway, but for the first time in a decade, my heart rate didn't even skip a beat.
