The interior of my Volvo felt like a sanctuary compared to the suffocating tension of the police station. As I pulled away, I saw Carter in the rearview mirror, his hand possessively on Hailey’s shoulder—a gesture he likely thought was comforting, but to me, looked like a director guiding a mediocre actress through a scene.

I didn't head home. Instead, I drove to a 24-hour FedEx. If Carter wanted to claim the West Hollywood office was "his" because his name was on the deed, he could have the walls. But the soul of that office—the intellectual property, the strategy decks, and the decade of PR blueprints—belonged to me.

I spent the night migrating the last of my personal encrypted files. By 4 AM, the digital tether was severed.

The next morning, my phone erupted. Not from Carter, but from the agency. Amanda had ignored my "sabbatical" request and CC’d me on an emergency thread.

“Carter’s 'secret' dinner with a 'mystery blonde' is trending. Stella, we need a statement. TMZ is hinting at a breakup. Fix it.”

I stared at the screen. For ten years, my thumb would have been flying across the keyboard before I’d even finished my coffee. This time, I simply deleted the app.
