“You good?” Alexander’s voice pulled her out of the mess in her head.
She forced a thin smile and looked sharply at him. “Fine. Just really, really exhausted. That is all.”

He nodded, turning his focus back to the road. His features were unreadable, and the silence between them was suffocating.
For the first time, she allowed herself to think about what she had done. How would she explain her flat stomach in a few weeks? How would she fake the upcoming doctor’s visits? What if Alexander finds out she didn’t take that test that evening.
Her mind was a chaotic whirl of panic and desperation.

The car slowed as they approached Alexander’s estate, the grand gates swinging open as if to mock her.
As Alexander pulled over and stepped out, Annie hung back a moment, her breath shaking. She looked at her reflection in the window of the car; her pale face and wide, haunted eyes stared back at her. She had always taken pride in her cleverness, but now it felt like her intelligence and deceitful ways were failing her.
