Chapter 8 The Metropolitan Museum's Grand Hall glittered with New York's elite-a sea of designer gowns, diamond-draped necks, and seven- figure net worths. I adjusted the lapel of my custom Armani suit-midnight blue with subtle silver threading that caught the light as I moved. Not a dress. Not tonight. Tonight was about power, not decoration. "Ms. Sterling, they're ready for you," the event coordinator whispered, touching my elbow lightly. I nodded, taking a measured breath as I approached the stage.
This was the Baxter Financial Excellence Award-an honor William had been nominated for three times but never won. Now here I stood, barely six months into my leadership of the merged Sterling empire, about to accept it. As I climbed the steps to the podium, I caught a flicker of movement in my peripheral vision. William stood half-hidden in a side corridor, watching. Even from this distance, I could see the ravages of the past months etched into his face-the hollowed cheeks, the rumpled suit that hung loosely on his frame.
For a moment, our eyes locked, and I felt a strange twinge in my chest that I quickly suppressed. "It is my honor to present this year's Baxter Award to Natalie Sterling," announced Diane Chen, the same board member whose support had helped me secure the Hamptons development. "Her innovative leadership and ethical approach to wealth management represents the future of our industry." The applause washed over me as I accepted the crystal trophy. Under the spotlight, I could feel William's gaze burning into me. "Thank you," I began, my voice steady and clear.
"When I founded Sterling Capital, I had a simple vision: to build something that would last, something built on transparency and mutual respect." I paused, scanning the rapt faces before me. "Too often in our industry, we mistake ruthlessness for strength and manipulation for strategy. Tonight, I'm proud to accept this award on behalf of my entire team, who prove daily that true power comes not from domination, but from elevation-lifting each other, our clients, and our community." 11 More applause.

In the corner of my eye, I saw William shift uncomfortably, his hand reaching for a champagne flute from a passing server. As I returned to my table, I spotted Arthur and Elizabeth making their way through the crowd. Elizabeth looked radiant despite her recent surgery, her arm linked firmly through Arthur's. When they reached me, Elizabeth enveloped me in a warm embrace. "We're so proud of you, dear," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. Arthur simply nodded, his eyes-so like William's but warmer, wiser-conveying everything words couldn't.
They took their seats at my table, a public declaration of their allegiance that sent ripples through the room. I felt rather than saw William's reaction. Across the room, he had emerged fully from his hiding place, his face a mask of disbelief as he watched his parents seated proudly beside me. For the first time, perhaps, he was truly seeing what he had lost-not just a business empire, but a family. The evening progressed with speeches and champagne, networking and polite laughter.
I played my part flawlessly, shaking hands with potential investors, accepting congratulations with gracious smiles. But part of me remained acutely aware of William, who had retreated to the bar, nursing what appeared to be his third scotch. During a lull in conversation, my attention was drawn to a table across the room where Lily sat, radiant in a dress that left little to the 1/2 Chapter 8 imagination. She wasn't looking at William. Instead, her fingers danced across her phone screen, a small smile playing at her lips. I watched as William noticed her too.
He straightened, smoothed his hair, and began moving toward her-a moth drawn to the flame that had already burned him. But before he could reach her, Lily stood, phone still in hand. She turned slightly, and I realized with a jolt that she had positioned herself perfectly-ensuring William could see her screen. Even from my table, I could make out the text she was sending: *On my way, Julian. Can't wait to see the penthouse. xx* William froze mid-step. I watched as the last piece of his carefully constructed world crumbled.
His shoulders sagged, his face crumpled, and for a terrible moment, I thought he might collapse right there on the museum's marble floor. Instead, he turned and stumbled toward the exit, a broken man fleeing the ruins of his life. "Natalie?" Michael's voice pulled me back. I hadn't noticed him approach my table. "Everything alright?" I tore my eyes away from William's retreating figure. "Yes," I said, surprised to find my voice steady. "Everything's perfect." And as Michael's hand briefly touched mine, I wondered if perhaps that might actually be true.
