Chapter 10 The grand opening of Sterling Capital's new headquarters was everything I had envisioned. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered panoramic views of Manhattan's skyline, the space designed with a perfect balance of power and warmth-so unlike William's cold, intimidating aesthetic. The evening hummed with energy as investors, clients, and press mingled, champagne flutes clinking against the backdrop of a string quartet. I stood at the center of it all, draped in a cream silk suit that felt like armor and flowed like water.

This moment represented everything I had fought for-not just professional success, but personal rebirth. 'Quite the achievement,' Michael's voice came from behind me, warm and steady as always. 'You've built something remarkable here, Natalie.' I turned to find him watching me with that particular intensity I'd grown accustomed to-admiration without objectification, interest without entitlement. 'Would you mind stepping into your office for a moment?' he asked, his usual composure betrayed by a slight tension around his eyes.

'There's something I'd like to discuss before the speeches begin.' Curious, I followed him through the crowd, nodding acknowledgments to guests as we passed. My office-a corner suite with views of Central Park-stood apart from the celebration, its door closed against the revelry. Once inside, Michael closed the door behind us, the party's sounds immediately muffled. In the sudden quiet, I could hear my own heartbeat. 'Is everything alright?' I asked, noting how he stood with his back to the door, hands clasped before him.. 'More than alright,' he said, then paused.

'Natalie, I've respected our professional boundaries since the day we met. I've watched you rebuild your life with a strength that astounds me.' He took a careful step forward. 'But tonight, seeing all you've accomplished, I can't remain silent anymore.' My breath caught as he continued. 'I'm in love with you,' he said simply, the words hanging in the air between us. 'Not with your success or your power or what you can offer me. Just you-your mind, your resilience, your heart.' The world seemed to still around us as he spoke.

'I'm offering partnership in the truest sense,' he continued, his voice steady despite the vulnerability of his confession. 'Equal footing. Equal respect. In life as well as business.' I stood frozen, emotions colliding within me-fear, hope, the ghost of past betrayal warring with the promise of something new. Before I could respond, a gentle knock interrupted us. My assistant's voice called through the door: 'Ms. Sterling? I'm sorry to interrupt, but there's someone insisting on seeing you.' Michael stepped back, giving me space. 'Take your time,' he murmured.

'I'll be here.' I opened the door to find my assistant looking uncomfortable. 'It's Mr. Sterling,' she whispered. 'William. He says it's important.' And there he was, standing in the hallway. Unlike his disheveled appearance in my office months ago, tonight William looked more 1/2 Chapter 10 like his old self-expensive suit, perfect hair, shoulders squared with forced confidence. But his eyes still held that unfamiliar humility. 'Natalie,' he said, his voice low. 'You look beautiful.' 'William,' I acknowledged, stepping into the hallway and closing my office door behind me.

'I wasn't expecting you tonight.' He produced a small velvet box from his pocket. 'One last olive branch,' he said, opening it to reveal the diamond earrings he'd given me on our first anniversary. 'I thought perhaps... now that time has passed...' I looked at the glittering stones, once symbols of what I'd thought was love. Then I glanced back at my closed office door, behind which waited a man who had never once made me question my worth.

'I appreciate the gesture,' I said gently, 'but I'm afraid I must decline.' I saw the moment understanding dawned in his eyes-not anger this time, but resignation. 'You've moved on,' he said quietly. 'I have,' I confirmed. 'My future is here, William. Not in our past.' He nodded slowly, closing the box. 'You deserve happiness, Natalie. I mean that.' For the first time since our marriage crumbled, I believed him. As William walked away, I returned to my office, to Michael. Without words, I extended my hand. He took it, his grip warm and sure.

Together, we stepped out onto the terrace overlooking the city. Below us, Manhattan sparkled like a sea of possibilities, each light a promise of what could be. 'Ready?' Michael asked softly. I squeezed his hand, my gaze fixed firmly ahead. 'Ready.' 2/2 Ruby Walker Ruby Walker is a rising voice in the world of romance and spicy fiction.
