Chapter 52 Eleanor POV I stood frozen there, my breath caught in my throat as all eyes followed Derek and Seraphina descending the staircase. He moved with confident strides, his broad shoulders perfectly framed by his tailored suit, while she followed closely behind, her hand trailing elegantly along the banister. The collective murmur of the guests quieted momentarily, as if acknowledging the entrance of royalty. Derek's gaze swept the room until it collided with mine. For a split second, something unreadable flashed in his eyes-surprise? Displeasure?

Guilt?-before his expression hardened into practiced neutrality. Seraphina, noticing our locked stares, moved closer to him, her shoulder brushing against his arm in a gesture that spoke volumes. "Let's go say hello to your husband," Olivia whispered fiercely in my ear, her hand gripping my elbow in solidarity. I noticed Derek had changed since earlier today-now wearing a crisp navy button-down that brought out the intensity of his eyes. The realization that he'd taken the time to change for Seraphina's party stung more than it should have.

As Derek and Seraphina reached the bottom of the stairs, Thomas approached them with two drinks. "There you are! I was beginning to think you'd abandoned your own party," he said with a knowing smirk. Derek took the glass but didn't respond, his attention still fixed on me. Seraphina's eyes followed his gaze, her perfect smile never faltering as she linked her arm through his and guided him toward me. "Eleanor, I'm so glad you could make it," Seraphina said, her voice honey-sweet but her eyes calculating. Derek turned to me, lowering his voice.

"What are you doing here at Seraphina's welcome party?" Before I could answer, Seraphina laughed lightly. "I invited her, Derek. I called her earlier." She squeezed his arm possessively. "We're all friends here, aren't we?" "We're not friends, Seraphina," I stated plainly, maintaining eye contact with her. Her smile didn't falter. "Any friend of Derek's is a friend of mine." She glanced around the room. "Since you're here, let me introduce you to some people." The tension between us was palpable, a triangle of charged emotions nearly visible in the air.

Seraphina's hand remained on Derek's arm as she leaned closer to him. "Derek, you simply must try tonight's cocktail. The bartender made it specially to your preference." "Is that so?" I found myself saying. "I was under the impression Derek only drinks whiskey, neat. No ice." Derek's eyebrow arched as he looked at me, surprise evident in his expression. "Since when do you monitor my drinking habits?" 1/3 "Since our wedding day," I replied evenly, meeting his gaze without flinching.

"I've had to memorize many things about you, Derek, even if you never bothered to learn anything about me." Something shifted in Derek's eyes-a flicker of... was it guilt? Admiration? It disappeared too quickly to identify. Seraphina smoothly interjected, "Eleanor certainly knows you better than I do. Not surprising, considering you... share a home." Her emphasis on those last words carried volumes of subtext. Derek's jaw tightened slightly. "Eleanor has always been observant," he said, his tone softer than before, causing both Seraphina and me to look at him with surprise.

A young man I didn't recognize approached our tense circle, extending his hand toward me. "Mrs. Wells, would you honor me with a dance?" As we shook hands, I felt him squeeze my fingers in a way that was unmistakably flirtatious. Derek's hand suddenly appeared at the small of my back, his touch burning through the thin fabric of my dress. "I believe my wife promised the first dance to me," he said, his voice low and dangerous. The young man retreated immediately, murmuring apologies.

"I don't recall making such a promise," I whispered as Derek guided me away from Seraphina, whose perfect composure had finally cracked to reveal a flash of annoyance. "You didn't," Derek replied, his hand still firm against my back. "But I wasn't about to let others paw at you all evening." "Jealous?" The word slipped out before I could stop it. Derek's eyes darkened. "Protective of what's mine. At least for now." The reminder of our impending divorce stung, but I maintained my composure. "How thoughtful.

And does that protection extend to explaining why you were upstairs with Seraphina?" "I don't owe you explanations, Eleanor," he said coldly, but something in his voice suggested uncertainty. "No, you don't," I agreed, pulling away from his touch. "Just as I don't owe you an explanation for attending a party I was invited to." Throughout the evening, Seraphina moved among her guests with effortless charm, the center of attention in her perfectly curated gathering.

Olivia and Thomas continued their verbal sparring in a corner, their animated expressions suggesting neither was willing to concede defeat. I found myself surrounded by several young professionals, making polite conversation while acutely aware of Derek watching me from across the room. I was grateful when Sophia Taylor approached, offering momentary escape from the awkward small talk. "I didn't expect you'd actually come," she said, swirling champagne in her crystal flute. "When one receives an invitation, why not accept?" I replied calmly. 2/3 Sophia's lips curved into a knowing smile.

I hope you won't regret that decision. Derek arranged this party specifically for Seraphina, you know. My heart sank, but I maintained my composure. The most devastating revelation came when I overheard a group of financial analysts discussing Derek's recent projects. "Wells only came back to Boston because Bradley returned, one man said confidently. "He wrapped up his London operations the moment she decided to move back." "That's not true, Seraphina interjected, appearing flustered. "Derek isn't the type to make business decisions based on emotions.

He simply completed his work in London." I glanced toward the terrace doors where Derek stood alone, his phone pressed to his ear, his expression serious as he conducted business even during a social gathering. As if sensing my gaze, he looked up and through the glass. Seraphina, standing nearby, caught his attention. The smile they exchanged spoke of years of shared history and intimate understanding. A hollow feeling spread through my chest. They looked perfect together-two beautiful people from the same world, speaking the same language of wealth and privilege.

I was the outsider, the temporary placeholder in Derek's life. As I watched them, the truth crystallized painfully in my mind: I was the one who didn't belong in this picture. I had always been the extra piece in a puzzle that was complete without me. "Eleanor?" Olivia appeared at my side suddenly, her expression concerned. "Are you okay?" 1 I nodded stiffly, unable to voice the realization that had settled like ice in my stomach. Derek had never been mine, not really. And soon, our three-year charade would end, freeing him to be with the woman he had always wanted.
