Chapter 9
After thirty minutes of fighting to save her, the girl named Riley Matthews was gone.
Dr. Harris had been doing this for decades. The moment they wheeled her in, he knew she wasn’t coming back.
It wasn’t about medical ability–she just didn’t want to live anymore.
He’d known her for three years. Her condition was serious, but not terminal at this stage.
But she didn’t give a damn about herself.
Later he found out she was completely alone, just trying to survive..
Dr. Harris went to her studio apartment to handle her affairs.
The place was trashed. Glass everywhere, footprints all over.
Tiny space–you could see everything at once.
Almost nothing left.
Toiletries and dishes were still there, but her clothes were gone. Her food truck equipment, gone. Even the little ceramic cat in the corner had vanished.
His heart sank, thinking she’d been robbed. He called the landlord immediately.
The landlord just sighed:

“She knew she was dying, I think. Gave away everything she could. Even donated her clothes to the building’s cleaning lady.”
The landlord’s voice cracked: “She paid me her last month’s rent before… I knew she was struggling, but I didn’t realize how sick she was. She used to smile so much. How did it come to this? ”
Later the landlord brought over a small cardboard box.
‘She left this. Think it was meant for you.”
The box was small, barely anything inside.
A family photo. A dead phone.
And a note:

department at Metro General. Tell him his friend died. Can he help with the arrangements? His number is xxx ]
Dr. Harris stared at it for a long time.
She’d planned everything. Even her own death.
He opened her wallet–five thousand in cash and a thin gold chain.
Just enough to cover the medical bills and funeral costs.
He wiped his eyes and pulled out a photo.
A couple’s selfie–faces pressed together, smiling.
The girl was Riley. The guy, he recognized.
Not long ago, Riley had attacked some girl with a knife. He was the one who bailed her out of jail.
Dr. Harris sat by her bedside for hours, then finally picked up the phone.
“I need family contact info for a patient who was here recently…
Yeah, Chloe Bennett.”
