Chapter 6 The second Asher got the call from the house manager, it felt like someone dropped a boulder on his chest. This dull, endless ache. "House explosion. Ma'am didn't make it out." The manager's words kept breaking apart and reassembling in his head. Simple as hell, but suddenly he couldn't understand them. Didn't want to accept it. Didn't want to believe it. He'd been buried in work overseas forever, hadn't had time to check personal messages. That's when he finally saw what Sloane sent. Widow? Make him one? What the actual fuck?
First time ever he completely lost his shit during work hours. Eyes went red, chucked his phone across the room. That day when he said that line, all he meant was simple: No matter what happens, he's never divorcing Sloane. She's the only woman he's ever gonna commit to. Period. But how... how did she take it THAT way? Asher stared at his shattered phone on the floor, voice shaking: "Why... why won't you just let me explain?" Yeah, he admitted it-when Bianca called that day, he wavered for a second. That's exactly why he rushed to the airport right away. To figure out what he really felt.
But the moment he saw Bianca, his heart didn't do shit. Flatlined. That's when he knew for sure. He'd already let go of Bianca and all those teenage feelings ages ago. That night a bunch of old school friends showed up at the airport too, so they all went out after. Asher didn't know what happened, but he ended up drinking way too much. Lost control. Had no clue his phone ended up in Bianca's hands. Had no clue Sloane called that many times. When Bianca kissed him, he thought it was Sloane. But the second he saw her face clearly, he shoved her off.
Even now he still remembers the look on Bianca's face. No shame. No embarrassment. Just this nasty, vindictive smile: "Why so freaked out? You guys got such a great relationship?" Chapter 6 "Too bad though-I'm miserable as hell." "Asher, sure I'm the one who dumped you back then. But don't act like you didn't destroy my family! You ruined us!" "So if I'm not living my best life, you don't get to either." Asher wiped his mouth in disgust and said coldly: "You're fucking psycho." He left the bar, planning to head home and make it up to Sloane, give her that quality time he promised.

But shit went sideways with the overseas deal-he had to fly out immediately. That trip? Half a month. He kept wanting to explain everything. But every single time, work got in the way. The thing at the house was supposed to be his best shot. But Sloane hid from him. Wouldn't listen. Asher sucks at talking to girls, never knew how. This overseas trip, he'd ordered this rare-ass blue sapphire ring for her as a gift. Never thought one misunderstanding could make her this done. This final. She'd rather die than stay with him. All that stress hit him at once.
Blood rushed to his head and he suddenly coughed up blood. These past few days he'd been working nonstop-barely sleeping-trying to wrap shit up fast so he could get home and fix things with Sloane. His body was already wrecked, couldn't handle this kind of emotional breakdown. His assistant heard the noise and burst in: "Mr. Harrington, this deal isn't that urgent. You need to go lie down in the lounge. I'll get a doctor-" Asher clutched his chest, forcing himself to stand up. His voice came out low and raspy, shaking uncontrollably: "...Don't need one.
Book me the next flight back to the States." "I'm going home." Seeing the house actually blown to rubble with his own eyes killed Asher's last bit of hope completely. If the house looked like this, how could anyone survive? Caden got back before him, already cried himself sick. He was losing it, fighting everyone trying to hold him back, trying to crawl into the half-collapsed ruins to find Kennedy. Watching from far away, Asher felt this weird jealousy. Sometimes he wished he could be like Caden-just let all his emotions out without giving a damn.
But he's still head of the Harrington empire. Logic and responsibility told him: everyone else can lose their minds. He can't. He forced himself to stay in control, walked up and physically stopped Caden. Soon as Caden saw him, his eyes went red and he threw a punch right at Asher's face. "This is YOUR fault! Why the hell did you tell Sloane that bullshit about 'no divorce only widows"?!" "You know they got all the staff out before the explosion on purpose? This huge fire only killed the two of them-they wanted to die right in front of us!" "Why did you say that shit?
Now they're actually dead and didn't leave us anything to remember them by. You happy now?!" Asher took the hit straight on. Blood poured out of his nose. But he didn't argue back. Had no reason to. No right to. This was all his fault. He regretted everything. Caden glared at his brother's frozen-ass face and got even more pissed, was about to punch him again when his phone suddenly buzzed. The old Harrington estate probably hadn't heard the news yet. So who'd be texting now? Caden pulled out his phone all confused. One look and his whole face changed.
