---- Chapter 9 (Evelyn's POV) Three months later. Outside a community school that served both human and shifter children, the final bell rang, and children poured out of the gates. I stood there in a chic beige trench coat, smiling and waving goodbye to them. Iwas a healer here now. When I looked up, I saw the figure who had been waiting for me almost every day. Dominic leaned against his car, holding a bouquet of flowers, his expression gaunt and humbled. He had lost weight, and the old arrogance was gone from his eyes.

Seeing me, Dominic immediately walked over, cautious and hesitant, like a child who had done wrong and was waiting for his punishment. For three months, Dominic had tried everything. He came here every day with the most expensive flowers, the rarest jewels. He even donated an entire building to the school in his private name. ---- Inever paid him any attention. Today, he seemed to have finally worked up the courage to stop me. "Evelyn," he said, his voice raw and hoarse. He wasn't holding any of his usual gaudy gifts. Instead, he pulled a photograph from his coat.

It showed a magnificent new mausoleum, carved from the finest white jade. The ground before the tomb was planted with moonflowers, my grandmother's favorite. "J... [rebuilt Grandma's tomb," he said, his voice low and humble. "And the good luck charm... I had an exact replica made. I even had it consecrated in the Moon Goddess temple for a full lunar cycle." Then, he took out another velvet box. Inside was a new brooch, carved from the highest-grade moonstone, a hundred times more brilliant than the last.

Under the shocked stares of the passersby and his own werewolf bodyguards, the once-proud Alpha of the Silvermoon pack slowly, solemnly, dropped to one knee. He bowed his head, holding the brooch up to me. "Chloe got what she deserved. She's been exiled to the desolate Northern Wastes. She can never come back," he ---- pleaded, his voice trembling. "Evelyn, Iam your Fated Mate. The Goddess willed it. Please, come back with me. Be my Luna. I will spend the rest of my life making up for everything I've done." Silence fell around us. Everyone held their breath.

Ilooked at him, my heart perfectly still. Tlooked at the Alpha I once admired and loved, and suddenly realized he was just an ordinary wolf. "The good luck charm, no matter how perfect the replica, isn't the one my grandmother gave me. And as for a chance-" "Dominic, I gave you a chance." My gaze went past him, to a place far away, as if I could see my grandmother smiling warmly at me. "But who gave my grandmother a chance?" With that, I walked around his kneeling form and left without a backward glance.
