Chapter 575 Sawyer guessed that Kate's confidence probably came from Connor and Evie, Ever since she was a child, they had molded her into the brightest young lady in Draventh. Over the years, everyone around her began to see her in this way. That title gave Kate a strange kind of confidence that made her forget how shallow she really was. After spending a considerable amount of time with her, Sawyer had come to realize that her academic degree was likely fraudulent. Once, he had casually asked her about something, and she fumbled through her answer.
But she somehow wrapped it up so neatly that it almost sounded convincing. Her talent, it seemed, was limited to the art of talking. Beyond that, she had nothing. Sawyer couldn't imagine having a child with her. That would be a sin. Besides, he wasn't interested in Kate in that way at all. If he felt anything toward her, it was only resentment. People liked to say that innocent family members shouldn't pay for someone else's sins, but Sawyer had never seen himself as a virtuous man. What Connor did back then had wrecked Sawyer's life and filled him with guilt and agony.

So wasn't it only fair for Kate to bear part of that consequence? "Sawyer?" Kate noticed that he was lost in thought. He looked up. "Yeah?" Kate pouted, clearly displeased. "I called you several times. What are you thinking about?" She was indeed upset. The topic of having children already bothered her, and now Sawyer was zoning out right in front of her. As his newlywed wife, Kate naturally felt unhappy about it. Usually, Sawyer would have set everything aside and gone to pacify her, but not this time. He put down his cutlery and said, "I still have work to finish.
Take your time with dinner." Without giving her another glance, he stood and walked to his study. Kate sat there, stunned. She couldn't believe that he had left just like that. Didn't he notice that she was upset? A wave of unease swept through her chest. After dinner, one of the maids Kate had brought from the Pearson residence, Lola Foster, approached her with a tray of fruit. "Mrs. Burton, today's fruit is really fresh. Would you like some?" Kate lounged on the balcony chaise, her mood heavy. "No, take it away." Lola hesitated. "Then perhaps a cup of warm milk?
It'll help you sleep." "No," Kate refused again. Lola immediately sensed that Kate was in a bad mood. Kate glanced at her. "Go tell Sawyer." Lola nodded knowingly and headed to the study. A knock came at the door. By the window, Sawyer stood in a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He had one hand in his pocket as he smoked. He felt irritated. Now, every time he saw Kate, his irritation threatened to boil. It was as if all the emotions he had harbored over the years because of the Pearsons had somehow taken on a life of their own. And now, they were clamoring.
Hearing the knock, Sawyer took a slow drag, then stubbed the cigarette out in the ashtray. "Come in." Lola cracked the door open slightly. "Mr. Burton, Mrs. Burton seems upset. She didn't eat much at dinner, and she's refusing fruit and milk. Would you like to check on her?" Sawyer turned his gaze back to the window. "Alright." Lola smiled and quietly closed the door. Not eating fruit or drinking milk meant that she was upset? And he was supposed to comfort her for that? Sawyer's brows tightened, his patience fraying. He thought that Kate really had too much free time on her hands.
If that were the case... Lucia Morh Lucia Morh is a passionate storyteller who brings emotions to life through her words. When she's not writing, she finds peace nurturing her garden.
