Chapter 8 After he left, my life finally went back to normal. But rich families don't let you escape that easily. A year later, my parents set me up with the eldest son of the Brooks Group. Turns out, it was my old neighbor from Australia. Ethan Brooks. We'd walked each other's dogs. He was a good cook. I'd mooched a few meals off him. "Wait, you're the 'difficult daughter' Mr. Peterson warned me about? Let's start over. Ethan Brooks, Brooks Group." I laughed and shook his hand. "Emily Peterson. Peterson Technologies." We grabbed coffee and caught up, sharing stories about our fur babies.
"Mine's turned into a demolition expert. Look what he did to my new couch." "Luna still wakes me up at five every morning. Doesn't let up." We were deep in conversation when someone I'd completely forgotten showed up. She threw coffee at me. Ethan blocked it, furious. "Where the hell did you come from? Do you let just anyone in here?" The manager rushed over, apologizing. "So sorry, sir. We'll throw her out immediately." Jessica fought the security guards, screaming at me. "This is your fault, Emily Peterson! You ruined my life! If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have lost the baby!

Now James doesn't want me either! I'll kill you! I'll kill you!" She thrashed like a maniac, punching and kicking. After they dragged her out, the manager came back with complimentary drinks, "That woman, heard she lost the baby last year. Lost her mind right along with it. Been acting crazy ever since." I sipped my coffee and wayed it off. A waiter brought Ethan a fresh suit. He changed quickly. I noticed his collar was crooked and pointed it out. He got this weird look and asked me to fix it. Chapter 8 88.89% I barely stood up when he kissed me, stole it right there. My face went red.
Before I could escape, another unwelcome guest appeared behind me. "James Harrington? What are you doing here?" Honestly, after all this time, just seeing him made me nauseous. He was even thinner than before. Gaunt, almost. I'd heard he'd been drinking himself stupid. "Hey, Emily. Long time." His voice was wrecked. That rich, deep tone I remembered, gone. He sounded like an old man on his deathbed. He smiled, trying not to scare me. "The day I divorced Jessica, she slit my throat with a knife. Said she wanted us to go out together." I stumbled back. Ethan caught me. "You okay?" I nodded.
James saw the guy behind me. His fists clenched, then went limp. "Emily, can we talk?" His eyes begged. I sat back down. "I'm kind of in the middle of something." His face went even paler. "I'll wait." He ordered coffee and sat by the door. Ethan rolled his eyes. "What is it with today and crazy people?" I pushed his coffee toward him. "Forget them. Tell me, what do you think about me?" He blinked at my directness, then rubbed his suddenly red ears. "I was actually planning to come back after sorting out family stuff and confess in Australia.
Did you get my texts?" He reached for my hand, then pulled back. Chapter 8 88.89% I thought about it. "Texts? Sorry, I thought they were spam and deleted them." He laughed it off. "No worries. This is better anyway." He pulled out a ring. I covered my mouth, eyes welling up. Then something occurred to me. I glared at him. "Wait. You're proposing with a ring you bought for someone else?" He grinned. "It has your name on it." I snorted. "You knew who you were meeting today. Of course it has my name." He pressed it into my palm and tapped my nose.
"Take a closer look." I squinted at his smug face, then looked down. Engraved inside the band: LUNA'S MOM. His dog was Max. Mine was Luna. The tears came for real this time. Then came the screaming from outside. "Oh my God, someone's been stabbed!" Chapter 8 88.89% admin
