Chapter 5 55 youchers I walked into the park and sat down . I was singing along and crying , a complete mess . I had just two days to find a place or leave Chicago . My mom always told me to come home whenever things got tough . But I couldn't just run back at the first major challenge . There had to be a way to fix this . I had to try . Make lemonade out of these damn lemons . " You have an awful singing voice . I bet you already know that . Crying ruins your pretty , perfect face ." I froze . Oh my God . Someone was sitting beside me .
I'd just had a full - blown meltdown in front of a total stranger . I slowly turned to look at him . Holy Molly . A Masterpiece . He had shiny , short black hair . A well - structured face . Straight nose . Chiseled jawline . Icy blue eyes . Tall . Lean . Built . The Armani suit he wore hugged every gym - earned muscle . His presence alone had gravity . Like he owned the damn world . And he was just sitting there like some work of art , waiting for my review . Jay always says we're both easy on the eyes . He needs to see this guy . Dayum !. Such a sight for sore eyes .
" I know I'm handsome and all , " he said , clearly amused " But getting admired by someone who's having a terrible day is new . " He caught me gawking . I wasn't even subtle . And yes , I was having a terrible day . I snorted . " It would be fine if it were just a day problem . It's looking like it's going to be days , maybe weeks ." He didn't respond , just kept staring at the trees . I needed someone to talk to . I didn't want to call home yet . Then , before I could stop myself , I blurted , " Can you be that stranger for me ? You know , like in movies or songs .
I tell you everything , and we never see each other again ." He glanced at me , the corners of his lips twitching . " Stranger ? " " Yes , " I breathed . " Okay . I'm a stranger to you . So , tell me , what's wrong ? Why are you crying ? " And I did . I dumped everything on him . My arrival in Chicago . Nancy and Lucas . The fact that I had two days to find a place . That I was jobless , broke , and lost . I was bawling by the end of it . But oddly , I felt better and lighter He sniffled . " I wish my problems were just about money and jobs . " Wait ... what ?
18:24 Fri , Nov 7 M G Chapter 5 He thinks this is minor ? Is he suicidal ? " Are you suicidal ? " I panicked . 5 55 Vouchers " Please don't do anything . I swear it gets better . Just try and talk to someone . Talk to me . Think about the people who love you . " I was rambling like a lunatic . He turned to me and chuckled , a dry , husky laugh . Then , still staring at the trees , he asked " What's your name ? " That was a sudden switch . I hesitated . " Aries " " Hmm . Aries ." He said it slowly , like he was tasting it . The rasp in his voice made it sound different .

I'd always liked my name , but now , I loved it . His gaze found me again . " Why Aries ? " " Same as my mom . I was born in April . She loves the month . It made sense , zodiac and all , " I explained . I started to squirm under his intense stare . He had this intimidating presence . Like he could read thoughts . Then he went back to gazing at the trees . " I'm not suicidal , " he finally said . " No need to panic . " I let out a long sigh of relief . Whatever he was dealing with , he wasn't planning to end it all . That was something . We sat in silence .
I peeked at him from the corner of my eye. He checked his watch , stood up , and walked away . Weird . I reached for my phone to call Jay . Then someone slid a phone into my hand . It was him . He had come back . " Put your number in here for me , " he said . Chicago was already giving me enough surprises to write a novel . I typed in my number and handed it back . " You'll be getting a call from me soon . Make yourself available , " he said , and walked off . I was still trying to figure out what just happened . I nearly called Jay , but stopped . I couldn't go through all that again .
Not tonight . Instead , I listened to music to lift my mood . At some point , I fell asleep . I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing . The sky had darkened . I must have slept for hours . 7 III < 18:24 Fri , Nov 7 M Chapter 5 The number was unfamiliar . " Hello , Aries on the line ," I answered , voice still groggy . " Where are you ? " the voice asked . I recognized it instantly . Him . " Still at the park . " " Okay . Stay there . I'm coming . " Click . I wasn't ready to return home . Not to Nancy . Not to Lucas . Might as well hear what he had to say .
Twenty minutes later , a black SUV pulled up . My phone buzzed with a text : " I am here . " I walked to the car . He was in the backseat . His driver , an older man , was at the wheel . I climbed in and greeted them . " Drive , " he instructed . The ride was silent . 55 vouchers Eventually , we stopped in front of a high - end restaurant . I am sure they have five star rating . Everything screamed wealth . A host escorted us to a private table . The ambience was stunning , elegant and luxurious . I felt so out of place . Like a fish out of water . The waitress arrived to take our order .
I glanced at the menu , pretending to read it . Meanwhile , from the corner of my eye , I saw the waitress checking him out . Very unprofessional . I mentally rolled my eyes. " Pan - seared steak and creamy mashed potatoes , " he ordered . She turned to me . I hadn't even decided yet . " I'll have the same as him , please , " I said . Safer that way . " Drinks ? " " Water is fine . " " And you , sir ? " she asked sweetly . He scrolled through his phone . " Water . Room temperature ." She nodded and left . He was glued to his phone , typing furiously , a scowl on his face .
Whatever he was dealing with , it wasn't fun . Then he put his phone down . His icy blue eyes locked onto me . " Come work for me , " he said . 55 vouchers Chapter 5 I opened my mouth to speak , but he raised a hand to silence me . " Listen first . You can ask questions after . " He took a sip of water . " You'll be my assistant . You'll work from my home office . Accommodation is included . " He slid his phone toward me . " Type in your email address . The job offer and description will be sent to you . " Then he placed a card beside the phone . " That's my card .
Call or come find me when you decide . " I nodded . Words escaped me . A job , a place to stay . A new start . But why ? " Why ?" I finally asked . He raised a brow . " Why am I offering this ? " I nodded again . " Because I can . Now , it's your choice ." He downed the rest of his water and returned to his phone . The food arrived . We ate in silence . He answered a few messages . I just sat there , exhausted , staring at my plate . After dinner ? A meeting ? Whatever it was , he dropped me off at home . The place was quiet . No Nancy . No Lucas . Thank God .
I crashed onto the couch and closed my eyes . No more decisions tonight . My brain was done . Then my phone beeped . An email . I opened it . The offer letter . I started reading it reluctantly . Then I saw the salary . I sat up so fast I nearly gave myself whiplash . I counted the zeros twice . Who the hell pays that much for a personal assistant ? And someone with zero experience ? I grabbed his card and Googled him . Austen
